Symbolism on the international stage is powerful.

You don't need symbolism, you need a recognition that the good of all nations is the good of your nation.

For instance, in the Covid19 pandemic, if the rich nations don't assist the poor nations enough, the virus will have more time to mutate, and the rich nations will suffer. If the rich nations don't assist the poor enough in climate change the rich nations will suffer. There needs to cooperation in the pandemic and climate change or all nations will suffer including the nation you happen to live in. War is another example, if there is escalating instability in the world, and that is going on now, all nations will suffer. There is so much money spent on defense, or let's be honest and call it preparation for war, that many nations don't have the money adequate to take care of their citizens. There is a common purpose then to help nations that are unstable, if the nations weren't so blind as to not recognize this. There is also blindness to the common purpose of fighting the pandemic and climate change. The blindness may not be in the leaders as much as the people who elect those leaders.
