Buddhist Mantra Thread

Thought I'd make a thread for sharing mantras, since chanting them is seen as meritorious and effective by many schools historically.

Feel free to share any mantra helpful and/or meaningful to you. Any language is fine.

Kuan Yin Mantra- Japanese
Kanzeon Sutra

Kanzeon:

Namo Butsu

Yo butsu ein

You butsu een

Bupo so en

Jo raku gajo

Cho nen Kazeon

Bo nen Kanzeon

Nin nin ju shinki

Nin nin fu ri shin

Mantra translates roughly to: Kanzeon: Homage to the Buddha. With the Buddha I have origin. With the Buddha I have affinity. Affinity with Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. In the morning, my thoughts are Kanzeon. In the evening, my thoughts are Kanzeon. Moment after moment arise from mind. Moment after moment are no other than mind.

Chanted for salvific effects. From the Lotus Sutra. Mantra of Kuan Yin.

Namo Amida Butsu- Japanese

Homage to Amida Buddha

On abokya Beiroshano, makabodara mani handoma, Jimbara harabaritaya un- Japanese

Mantra of Vairocana Buddha

Amida and Vairocana are seen as the same Buddha by many eastern schools. The primordial Buddha of Infinite Light. True Buddha form. Spontaneously generated. True Dharmakaya/Buddha-body.

Amida or Amitabha is chanted to for rebirth in his pure land, to learn the dharma from him.

Vairocana Mantra or Mantra of Light is considered salvific, meritorious, and protective of all Buddhists.

Medicine Buddha Mantra, which I've personally found very effective. When I chanted it the whole 108 times I passed something from my body. I have no idea what it was.

Tayata Om Bekandze Bekandze Maha Bekandze Radza Samudgate Soha

For mental, physical, and inner well-being. The Medicine Buddha, or Menla is also called the Buddha of Lapis Lazuli Light and is typically depicted blue.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

Since my heart attack I have quite an affinity with medicine Buddha. This I listen to while doing housework. Chopping wood carrying water. :0)

The Four Immeasurables

Sometimes the chanting is seen as purifying for doing Buddha Mantras. Typically done in a Mahayana service:

May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering
May all beings be happy and attain the causes of happiness
May all sentient beings be not separated from joy
May they be peaceful, free, and without aversion, greed, or anger
