bugs are cool

does any one else find insects to be incredibly neat little guys?

their little bodies are incredibly complex, their sizes and shapes are myriad, and they're really fun to watch.

who's with me?! :D

Those are gladiator beetles, no?

I agree, bugs are very fun to watch. I used to have a phobia for bees and wasps (and anything remotely like them), but I'm pretty ok with them now. I love to watch ants, especially. I experimented on an anthill several times, for fun, one summer. I would place various objects around an anthill, to see what would be found first, and how many ants would come for it and such. Some other kid in the same neighborhood used to stage battles between bugs (I disagreed with it, but I couldn't stop him). He'd pit termites against ants, or put a live catapillar near an anthill, to watch it get mauled to death. Once, he caught ten wasps and ripped off their wings before pitting them against an anthill. Horrible, isn't it?

ugh. in elementary school there were a group of especially sadistic boys who'd crumple ants into little balls to get me to cry.

i love watching ants... especially if they're building or repairing their nest, you can watch them take the individual grains of sand and spit them out and then go in for more. and feeding them is cool.

ha! never raced cockroaches. i did, however, free them from the roach traps my mom left around the kitchen.

i'm sorry, but dying slowly in a gooey, toxic mess is a horrible way to go no matter who you are. :(

I'm horrible.

I really, really love spiders (which, I know, aren't bugs, but which do fall into the vast scientific category of Things That Make Me Scream and Run Away) in theory. In practice, though, I can barely bring myself to try to get them out of the house instead of hiding behind my pet ferret and hoping it will decide it wants a cruchy treat.

Again, I'm horrible.

Spiders are bugs. Just not insects.

I know it's hard Feathers (I was afraid of anything vaguely wasp-like, remember), but if you acclimatize yourself to them you really can banish your phobias. ;)

Or if not banish them, adopt a horrible counterphobia :D

I love love LOVE bugs :) Well, I love anything that's alive. I got really angry at my English class today for killing a bug :( There are only two people in my class who will back me up when I'm trying to convince someone not to kill a bug...:(

I, for one, like bugs in most any place. Heck, I don't even mind some in the home. It's roaches I draw the line at. They're good to go outside, but keep them there :).

By and large, though, I simply like them. I know rolly-pollies aren't insects, but I always love to watch them. They're simply fun :).

I hate spiders. I mean I am so afraid of them that I will get as far away from them as I can and throw things. I am such a coward when it somes to that. As far as bugs go, I don't mind them for the most part. I don't like mesquitos. I have never been stung by a bee, so I don't know if I should be afraid of them or not. I guess I should be tested to see if I am allergic, but I haven't yet. It's on my list of things.

I use to be extremely arachnophobic to the point of freezing at the mere sight of one. Now I still have a problem with them if they are physically on me, especially if they are quite large, but I don't jump at the sight of them anymore. I had a good size one in my bathroom last night and I do what I always do now...I caught it and took it outside and let it go. I have more respect for spiders than six legged creatures. Outside they are fine...even cool you might say, but in my home...NO. Creepy crawlies are not welcome in my home...anything with more than four legs is not a welcome guest in my home.:p

No legs...fine...I LOVE snakes...six legs...you gotta go out :D

As a colloquial term any little creepy-crawlie can be called a bug, but biologically only those insects in the order Hemiptera (or, to be more modern , the-taxon-previously-known-as-Hemiptera)

Entomologically, none of the insects mentioned or pictured here thus far are bugs.

I haven't killed any bugs in two years (at least on purpose). :162:

I have an understanding with the poisonous biteys around here...if I come across them in the garden then I'll leave them alone, but if they come into the house, then they're fair game. (Only the poisonous ones, though. There's a spider roamig around on the wall of this room as I type.)
We did some landscaping for a couple just after Easter, and one of them was on holidays and mortally afraid of spiders. There was a HUGE huntsman (very large spider, non-aggressive, non poisonous) mooching around on the driveway, and she was going to kill it, so we picked it up and moved it into the garden.
When her other half came home, she told her we must be Buddhist, because we wouldn't kill anything.:jiggy:

I love insects. They're so fascinating. I used one of my assignments in art class to do a sculpture of a rhinoceros beetle, actually :D I'm so proud of that little guy. I've gotta get a picture of him once my camera's fixed.

I can let bugs (even spiders) crawl on my hands, doesn't bother me. My favorite is the praying mantis, I find them absolutely facinating!

Eight legs or six...they're all bugs to me. I can't say I find the majority of them cute, but I have a live and let live attitude about most of them. The exceptions are cock roaches and flies which are on my hit list. Thankfully, I don't have to deal with cock roaches.

We live in the country and so we have a plethora of spiders, roly polies, japanese beetles, mosquitoes and other winged and non-winged itty bitties. If they get in my way, I'll just move them. I hate the mosquitoes because I'm the local buffet (and the assurace that nobody else in the area will be bothered by the little devils), but I love watching the bats in the evening. No mosquitoes....no bats.

I never kill spiders and will many times even leave their infrequent webs alone since they take care of the flies. If the webs are old or fly filled, I'll get rid of them. So now you know how weird I am. :D

We have a little 3rd grader living next door to us and she was over the other night helping us dig the holes for the new trees we're putting in (16 of them!). After watching us take the time to move a cricket from immediate danger, she commented, "You should just kill it. It's not part of nature." Not surprising since the Chem-Lawn truck visits twice a year to pollute their lawn (and our shared groundwater). We're corrupting her by teaching her the joys of nature and organic gardening. :p

i'm really not fond of parents who instill this "it's ok to kill things smaller than you because you can" mentality into their kids. not part of nature?! what?

what a misguided little kid. glad you're showing her the light, Melody!

You beat me to it sey! Meh...

I love all life forms, i try to never kill anything except to eat. I went through a stage in my life when i wouldn't even kill a mosquito, i'd spend sometimes up to an hour running around my room in the middle of the night trying to catch one in a jam jar and throw it out the window. Now though, if its the middle of the night and i'm really tired i will try to catch 'em for a bit, but if it takes too long i apologise to it then kill it really fast. Of course i always check to make sure its a female, since the males can't bite you. (if you're interested, the males have fluffy antennae and are a bit smaller than the females)
