Burning books and effigies - What the hell is wrong with these people (all of 'em)?

Settlers attack West Bank mosque and burn holy Muslim books - Times Online

Book burning is just as wrong when Jews do it as when non-Jews do it. I may not be very left-wing when it comes to Israeli politics, but I do believe that baseless hatred serves no purpose, and violence (while sometimes inevitable) should be kept to the absolute minimum necessary-- and that certainly doesn't include book-burning!

It opens a way(s) to violence if you ask me (burning any religious book) just to provoke and mock a religion in general.

No doubt. Why would we expect religious people, whose religions teach and promote peace, to behave and respond peacefully? The whole idea is simply ludicrous.

Millions of Muslims have been slaughtered at the hands of different countries few examples Italians,French,Russians,Serbs,Israeli's,Indians,Americans pretty much a neo Holocaust.

I don't want to get too OT, but, I don't think those examples can be seen as a "neo-Holocaust", there more examples of mass murders, I'm not trying to defend those actions either, but, I just wanted to say there is a difference between the a genocide on the scale of the Holocaust, and mass murders (it's something I learnt about from my course at uni, where we studied the Politics of Mass Murder).

Godobeyer wanted a video or pictures of Muslims burning a bible because he didn't believe the articles posted. As for the article of the Mosque in Israel, I could counter by saying that just as many synagogues are attacked in that country too, but that would not serve the purpose of this thread which is book burning and not vandalism.

French Colonialism caused the death of 1.000.000 Algerians.

During the Italian colonial period, between 20% and 50% of the Libyan population died in the struggle for independence, and mainly in prison camps.

My grandfather taught me proper respect for books growing up. He forbid me to take texts in the bathroom because he believed 1) if the text mentioned the name of God the book did not belong there 2) I should show proper respect to all literature. For example he gave me a good whack across the head when I kept kicking my math textbook :) This was just for commonplace literature. For the holy books of Christianity and Judaism it is required to clean oneself before one can read the text. Hence whenever I have read the Bible I would make whuddu first. Burning any religious book is repulsive to me.

It's surprising historical actions like these aren't ever mentioned in mainstream education in the West.

West has it's own priorities and Arabs & Muslims in general aren't important in their view the Bosnian war should have been an eye opener.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
You don't seem to get it. We don't CARE if stupid people burn books. I mean, we may not LIKE it but we're not going to sacrifice our freedom of expression by outlawing an act of protest - even if it's a stupid act.

Look, burning a book doesn't hurt or threaten anyone - it only offends. If we start outlawing everything that offends other people, we would live in a very weird, paranoid, restricted society and that is an unacceptable alternative to most Americans and Westerners.

Thank God for that.

Doesn't surprise me in the least.
I mean, if it wasn't for the fact that my father did three tours in Vietnam, I would not know much of anything about that fiasco.

well i am not surprised at all, they dont mention Umayyad,Abbasid,Ayyubid,Mamluke,Samanid,Taharid,Saffarid,Buyid,Sallarid,Almoravid,Almohad,Ghaznavid,Timurid,Mughal,Safavid,Afsharid or Ottoman much either. You would probably have to take it in a specialist subject
