2017 is about to end. And why is that?

The history of keeping track of time is as old as humankind, with a larger number of calendar systems appearing in the ancient Middle East, including the Assyrian and Babylonian calendar, the Zoroastrian calendar and the Hebrew calendar. A number of other calendars developed in Greece, and later in Rome, to whom we owe our current way of measuring years.

Ancient calendars were based mostly on the cycles of the moon, but in 45 BCE Julius Caesar came up with a new system (Julian calendar - Wikipedia). The Julian calendar no longer depended on the observation of the moon, but simply followed an algorithm of introducing a leap day every four years. So yes, it’s the Roman’s fault that 2017 will be over soon... sort off ;)

Since there has been enough pointing out the bad things that happened throughout the year, I want to tell you 6 good things that happened to me in 2017. It was a tough year, but not all was bad after all.
  • I started intermittent fasting, by far the best thing I’ve ever done for my overall health. And in the process, I started sleeping better too. No idea what connects not eating for 16 hours a day and sleeping better but I’m very happy about the result.
  • My aunt and uncle celebrated their 50th anniversary with a family gathering that I attended even though I'm socially challenged, but they are happily married and when people manage to stay married and happy and love each other for that long they deserve a big party and they deserve my effort.
  • I joined RF.:D:D:D
  • My guitar skills improved. I’m far from being a good player but I’m better than I was last year. Baby steps.
  • I visited 2 new places where I had never been before.
  • I balanced my budget despite a few unexpected expenses and still had enough money left to go buy a ticket to watch Star Wars.

Enough talking about me. Your turn to list good things from 2017.

What a great idea for a thread.

My #1 positive this year was my wife being over a couple of major medical issues and optimistically looking forward to next year.

Otherwise, I don't really have too much to report outside of the continuing company of friends and the help from my exercise coach - our dog.

This is clearly the best part about 2017 :D

For me:

  • I met a wonderful spiritual compatible man, who has contributed much healing to my loveless childhood
  • I starting studying herbalism both as medicine and as a spiritual aid
  • I bought my first furbaby ever, a beautiful miniature labradoodle puppy, and she has given me so much joy
  • My favourite South Korean group (BTS) were the first Korean act to reach billboard top 100 and feature on the american music awards
  • My mum got remarried to a man who loves her and makes her happy (she was previously in an abusive marriage - so my comment about my loveless childhood)
  • I became much more mentally stable and am happier and hopeful about the future. It's the brightest year I've had in all my 24 years.

My wife and I started playing actual gigs besides all the open mics we visited (stick with that guitar, you'll thank yourself in your old age).

BTW, what are you playing and what kind of music, if you don't mind my asking.

Great things about 2017:
- Helix (a Canuckistanian company) is thriving, & will ship the world's finest folding bicycles in 2018
- I discovered that Vee is socially challenged too.
- Sunrise is no longer in love with my leg.

I'm still at the basics although I've already managed to nail the F and the Bm chords after a bit of a struggle .
For the moment I'm learning simple rock/pop/indie. If you have any suggestions for easy, pretty songs for newbies who don't have a great voice, please let me know.

If you've nailed the F and Bm you are well on your way. Instead of songs (which will get easier and easier to do) I would suggest working heavily on scales if you aren't already.

Your simple major and minor scales (C is the easiest) and the pentatonic scales. Sounds hard but they're not, You'll be surprised how your playing and "ear" will improve. Good luck and list me on your first album.
