California Solar Plants Igniting Birds Mid-Air

UPDATE - can someone correct the title of my post to California (spell error)?

This is horrible. Birds are being scorched to death in mid-air over a large solar plant in California. The concern is the up and coming migrations and what the death toll will bring.

Emerging solar plants scorch birds in mid-air | Fox News

Details include:

The ignited birds are called "streamers" by workers at solar plant for the smoke plume that comes from birds that ignite in midair, one every 2 minutes on average.

More than 300,000 mirrors, each the size of a garage door, reflect solar rays onto three boiler towers each looming up to 40 stories high.

Another larger proposed solar plant is on a flight path for birds between the Colorado River and California's largest lake, the Salton Sea, an area, experts say, is richer in avian life than the Ivanpah plant, with protected golden eagles and peregrine falcons and more than 100 other species of birds recorded there.

I am an avid fan of birds as some know. I also, want to protect our animal friends. These large solar plants sound like death traps to wildlife, because the death of one can, and often does, domino the death of another.

Maybe not shut down but the next time you build a solar plant make sure that it is not in the path of migrating birds.

We have this huge cat problem here killing our birds now this? They need to find a better solution to harnessing solar energy.

Well, if you Californians are willing to foot the bill to relocate these huge Solar facilities then be my guest. For the record, Human existence inevitably kills some other life forms. You have to break a few eggs in order to make an omelette. ;)

Hey, I'm willing to.

All life involves the death of others, but when death is avoidable, it should be avoided, especially when the death does not itself provide anything.

Maybe they could lease the airspace above the plant to KFC for unlimited quantities of BBQ'd chicken.

Perhaps there's some way to discourage birds from flying thru the broiler.
But even if not, are the alternatives better?
- Burning gas, oil or coal
- Flooding valleys for hydroelectric dams
- Nuclear
Honestly, I think the first thing they need to check out is if they can either find a way to, as you say it, discourage the birds from flying over there or see if they can rebuild it a little so this wont be a problem. Not that I know how that would be done, or if it can, its just what I would do.

They should come up with innovative ways to keep birds out of the area like airports do.

Well that's a case for building photovoltaic solar power plants instead of concentrated solar power plants.

PV doesn't have this problem, so that should be a variable to consider when designing a power plant now.

Fair enough. :)

Personally, I think Groundskeeper Willy's & Penumbra's ideas are pretty decent solutions to this issue.

They're good future solutions, but the immediate problem needs addressing, which involves this one plant, not future ones.
