Who here has a collection of books?

How many books do you have, and what sort of books do you collect? Any particular books that you own and want to tell everyone about?

I've no idea how many books I have. Thousands. A whole room of floor to ceiling homemade shelves, plus more in my bedroom. I don't 'collect' them. I just buy them and they accumulate.
Lots of subjects: Various sciences, anthropology, religion, counter-culture, Natural history, animals, Languages/linguistics, history... all kinds of stuff. took a couple of encyclopedias to the thrift store when I discovered I could get them on disks. They were getting old anyway.
Oh, and a wall of sci-fi in the pigeon room.
Oh, and lots of old magazines.

I suppose I had best start with my collection. I have about four hundred and fifty books, with a predominance of SF and fantasy, but also a variety of other fiction novels.

I don't have any particular books that I would like to brag about, though.

I dont have a book count really.
I have a variety of books, from history and archaeology (Greek, Roman, archaeology of Israel, Aztec and mesoamerican, British, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Phoenician etc. from literary works to architecture, culture, etc.
mythology of the world (Norse, Mesopotamian, world mythology in general)
sacred texts.. from the basics such as the OT, NT, Qur'an, the Gita, Upanishads, Tao te Ching to more modern material such as Thelemite texts, and other historical texts such as the Enuma Elish and Mesopotamian texts, poetry and literature.

a bit of biographies, such as Hitler's, Washington's.

some modern Japanese literature.

WWII history.

Some nice vintage books, such as early 20th century books like The Mind of Leonardo da Vinci, 19th century book about the works of Michelangelo.

Art books, the entire paintings of Dali, Islamic art, Viking art, etc.

Astronomy (with a bunch of theoretical astronomy) and other fields of science.

I have some scifi and fantasy (urban/dark fantasy and more old school such as Tolkien), Neil Gaiman, Gregory Maguire, Heinlein, PKD, Herbert, Roger Zelazny).
Anne Rice, although my loyalty sticks mainly to the very first Interview with the Vampire.

and many more!

Compared to the sophisticated and intelligent themes in other people's bookcases, I feel embarrassed to admit to my collection contains authors such as Arthur C. Clarke, John Grisham, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, Mario Puzo, Terry Pratchett, Matthew Reilley, and Peter F Hamilton, and very little non-fiction.

Hey, Pratchett and Clarke can fill the gap :D
Pratchett is awesome, Neil Gaiman+Pratchett on the same novel= double the pleasure!

I've probably got a little over 1000 books in a wide array of subjects.

Many fiction, mostly of the horror genre, many non-fiction texts on science, ancient histories, and religions.

However the largest part of my "collection" (and my pride and joy) is devoted to music biographries, auto-biographies and oral histories ranging from artists like Robert Johnson (think Blues musician who aparently sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in exchange for being an expert musician), to Nikki Sixx's (Motley Crue) 2007 autobiography The Herion Diaries, and everything in between.

I hate that monkey! (and where's his tail?) -- and that goofball in the yellow hat. :149:
That elephant Babar isn't much better.

Tintin is far superior, and Asterix & Obelix even better.

The Asterix comics are truly excellent - witty, intelligent, and hilarious - appreciatable by both adults and children. Oh, except the last five or so comic books, which are pretty bad. Tintin doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraph - numerous coincidences jerkily progressing the plot forward, and the large plot problems in the many of the novels is too large to ignore.

And this is from someone whose very first book they got into was Tintin.

Most of my books are fiction with the exception of text books for uni. Virtually all my books are fantasy with a few war stories and some comedy crime books. The only book in my collection even remotely "intellectual" is Paradise Lost.

He is one of my favourite characters in The Simpsons!

Though to answer your question no I haven't read any of his work. Though I read recently experts doubt if he ever even existed.

The wife & I have around 2000 books. My collection is largely theological with some anthropology / WW1 & 2 aircraft plus some novels. Netties is similar with crafting books taking the place of the theological ones in mine. :D

Tell me about it!
My wife was a primatology major so anything that gets primate science wrong just infuriates her. I remember seeing the Tarzan Disney film and she was beside herself whispering to me in a crowded theater that lemurs are not in Africa and certainly don't make male chimpanzee sounds. Not to mention the monkey/tail, ape/no tail issues...:D

I have a lot of books despite clearing out half my collection last year. Everything from evolutionary biology textbooks, old H.P. Lovecraft stuff, to an 1856 edition of Confessions of an Opium Eater. That one makes a good coaster.
