Can America Hold Together?

Do Americans have enough in common to hold together as a nation? Isn't the South pretty much an oddball when compared with the rest of the nation?

Yeah, I think that we can hold together. Getting rid of some talking heads would greatly help with national unity. That is, there are a few conservative and liberal talk show hosts that get otherwise peaceful folks in a frenzy, ready to repeat the bile they hear on the radio rather than participate in helpful and constructive debate.

And if that censorship doesn't work, we can try re-education camps.

Considering how inertia-driven the American populace is, what would cause the nation not to hold together?

Isn't the South pretty much an oddball when compared with the rest of the nation?

Not anymore oddball than the northeast, northwest, southwest, midwest, west, the mid-Atlantic, Florida, California, Alaska, Hawaii, or North Dakota.

not really sure, tho id lean towards not.

america is a failing empire, period. there are some who are willing to admit this and plan for the eventuality, learning from the european examples. and others who are not willing to admit any american weakness, and refuse to learn anything, much less anything from europeans.

the fact is that the 2 groups are mostly in different regions of the country, and if the latter group dosent......well, if they dont get un-retarded, their going to hold us all back. and im not sure the former group is going to tolerate that. in which case im gonna have to get my *** out of texas.....and the south in general, because i dont think my kind will be tolerated in the new corporate christian theocracy.

Can America hold together? Hopefully not.
Holy moley, Zephyr and I actually agree on something! =O

Agreed. It's been failing at least since the world wars, and probably before then.

Corporate Christian Theocracy? I wouldn't be worried about that. Religion is slowly dying down here. Most "Christians" these days just claim to be Christian because that's how they were raised (and sometimes because they want to be viewed as good people. Happens a lot in politics). More and more people are getting upset with the hypocrisy in their religion and heading towards atheism. Eventually God will be just a far distant memory that no one cares about anymore D=.

I say that America will DEFINITELY fall, and SOON. And not "soon" as in, the Rapture is happening soon, I mean soon as in, within my lifetime. Democracy combined with materialistic, Western culture is a recipe for epic failure =/. Simply put, the power is being put in the hands of the people, who are then mesmerized by politicians, false prophets, advertisers, businessmen, lobbyists, etc into not using their power, so the rich aristocracy can slowly take control of the government. In the long run, democracies will end up even worse off than monarchies. At least in monarchy, the king rules by divine right or force, instead of by constantly lying to the people.

Though I doubt for the same reasons.
Typical argument says that America's interventionist foreign policy has caused over half the world to wallow in poverty. Or something like that, right Zephyr? I would blame more of it on the Europeans, but US foreign policy certainly hasnt helped.

Anybody who says the US is close to internal collapse is ignoring history and any political science courses they might have taken. The south is trending democratic as its cities grows, so the whole unbridgeable divide is a whole load of crap. Hopefully it trends a bit faster so we can actually modernize our infrastructure.

H'm, all this time I thought Florida was amongst the southern states during the civil war.

America can hold together, me thinks that the peoples will not. Too much division, too many set in their ways (both good and bad). With our current Federal Government takeover and States rights and private industry being turned over, America just won't be the country it has been. Some would applaud this, others will long for times past. Yep, America will hold together but I'm not sure for what.
