While alteration of consciousness is anathema to most Middle-Eastern religions, it is the sine qua non of many Eastern ones. While traditionalists may object to pharmaceutical shortcuts, hallucinogens do appear to induce true mystical experiences in some cases.
If you do choose to try a pharmaceutical approach, though, I'd advise against mushrooms.
Mushrooms are a complete crapshoot -- you don't even know what species you're getting, let alone their pharmacologic properties. The numerous hallucinogenically active compounds in mushrooms are not metabolically active, they're insecticides, and their levels can vary from barely detectable to overwhelming -- in fungi growing only a meter apart. The same applies to other, purely toxic compounds, which mushrooms are notorious for.
