Can Love Be Defined? Is It Possible Even?

Lots of question lately as to what love is. So what do you think? How could you define love? Can love be defined even? Or is it too large to be defined in human terms?

Loving someone means you put that person's desires, and what they want, ahead of your own. It's the opposite of selfishness.

But what if a stranger wants you to give them something? If you are always to put others first then you have to give it to them. But what if they ask for one things after another until they take everything you have? How do you defend yourself if you must keep that definition of love without breaking it? Couldn't be perfect love could it? Thats why you need a God to tell you when to give and when to withhold and you can then use that to defend youself from this kind of attack.

True. Many people take advantage of unconditional love.
Hi there, interesting conversation and points. I have experienced this very thing that you both describe and it didn't end well. I ended up losing it and breaking this definition of love. This is what I've come to understand sin to mean. The violation of this love. While I still believe this is the definition of Love and God's very nature in the Bible, it is very hard for us to live by perfectly.

"yet WHY are they putting that persons wants, desires, etc. ahead of your own?"

You've got THREE people in this sentence! Hence, my question. Grief.
my bad.

I shall correct my typo:
WHY are they putting that persons wants, desires, etc. ahead of their own?

(No prob.)

I guess, because of love! True love allows for no selfish motive. It boils down to motive: if the person sacrificing, is getting notoriety, etc. out of it, then that's one thing.... but getting enjoyment out of it? Lets hope! That's real love! Makes me think of Acts of the Apostles 20:35.

What do you think? (What about loving parents, doing things for their children?)

Love is that which makes you whole. It gives meaning to the seeming meaningless of existence. It boils your blood and freezes your heart. Love is an inexplicable interaction between individuals that charges the relationship in a way that can rarely be undone. Love can mend you, but it can also break you into little pieces.

Love is a strong feeling of affection and concern, or devotion and adoration.
- a human experience easily defined in human terms.

The expression of Love is boundless
"how much"? - a full cup that can't be filled.
