Someone sent me this link and I would like to know if the is true.

I haven't seen it in any of the bigger news sites but the world is getting so insane I wouldn't be that surprised...

Seattle 6th Graders Can’t Get a Coke at School, But Can Get an IUD

To my knowledge nobody uses IUD's anymore because there is link between their use and cervical cancer. So I doubt that they are giving them to kids. But these kids "are" probably getting some form of birth control made available to them as well as counseling.

Completely agree with the counseling part but shouldn't 13 year old be getting and education and learning that they are too young to handle the responsibilities of having an active sex life?

Because that's worked so well, right? No. It's much more effective(and cheaper) to teach them to have safe sex. Telling a rebellious teen not to do something is just begging them to do it. So instead, remove the whole taboo and say "sure, go on, just use a condom and such, thank you".

I don't know much about Washington State, but this doesn't surprise me.
Here in Indiana the schools got difficult about nutrition free ingestibles in the vending machines. One result was Pepsi adding some vitamins to the cola. So that part makes sense.

Then there are school systems trying to combat drop out rates. Teen pregnancy is a huge factor. Parents who don't supervise their children enough to even notice a sexually active 14y/o are a big problem. So I could well imagine a school providing contraception trying to keep kids in school.

So I expect the news is quite true.

I'm in my early thirties, not exactly an old lady, and I only started taking the pill when I was 19. At 13 y.o. I knew what sex was, I was aware of the risks and practicing it was nowhere near my radar for another few years.

If kids these young having sex is the new normal, I'm really, really glad I don't have kids!

Be really glad.

Part of the problem is that schools are trying to ameliorate problems ignored for most of history. They don't just write off "bad kids" and leave them to their fate. They try to help.
But it is hard to help when the parents are not on your side.

What? Me worry?
One problem I see right away is that it will be difficult to pour a pack of peanuts into the IUD.

What you say SkylarHunter sounds like wisdom to me :) ! The problem is the boys :) . At that age a lot of them are hormonal and they have absolutely no sense because of it. That along with peer pressure and the whole thing becomes a mess. Kids need supervised, but with today's working parents and over crowded schools, who is going to suppervise them? And on top of that with today's laws ( and I am not saying that they are wrong) anyone that is incharge of supervising kids has to really watch their step because they are guilty until proven innocent when it comes to children.

And Nietzsche (post #4) has a very valid point :) ! He really does!

I just had a new IUD put in last year. They are definitely using it still. I don't think the risk is significant enough to pull it from shelves. Paraguard (which is the copper IUD) is the best non-hormonal long term BC for many women sensitive to hormone BC.

Probably depends on where you live and at what time. When I was 13 we were having a boom in teenage pregnancies where I lived. "Emergency" safe sex education in school got a boost and there were no teenage pregnancies until I was out of high school. Yeah we got free condoms at the time, made balloons out of them.

Meh, I often see 11 year olds buying condoms at my work. I like to throw them of their little "game" by winking at them and jokingly saying "aww you think you can handle a woman eh?" If the kid is by themselves they get all shy. If they're with their mates they usually give me a sly wink.
But I'd rather see a kid with a condom in their wallet than see them in the next news special about the "world's youngest father."

Although the other week a girl who looked about 12 bought some lube and that made me raise my eyebrows. Though it ended up in a frank discussion about how her boyfriend wanted to try anal sex and I encouraged her to make sure she was comfortable before doing anything. The look of gratefulness that I was willing to talk to her and listen to her concerns worried me far more than her having sex at such a (presumably) young age. Teachers/parents/school nurses/medical professionals should be doing that for her, not some random checkout chick.

Wouldn't you rather the kids know all about it instead of just learning it bit by bit?
It just makes sense to me to teach them at a young age...
You don't have to encourage them preforming sexual acts.
However, you shouldn't be so naive as to think they wont do it anyways.
I started out young too, I may seem young anyways to you all though :D

Ahh the old balloon condoms. We got free condoms, they were even multi coloured ones (flavoured). So there was a "rainbow" of condoms stuck on the outside wall of a classroom soon afterwards. I think the teachers found it more amusing than we did since no one got detention over it. XD

Without verifying the info in the article, I'm inclined to say it's bogus.
I base this on some other headlines they have.....
Obama Prohibits Practice of Catholicism in U.S.
You beat me to looking at that site. Unfortunately right now the internet is a fetid swamp filled with lying. There are a goodly number of better sites such as RF, of course, but there are too many where the "father of lies" holds sway. The regular media is no home for saints, but compared to others they are marvels of truth and accuracy. That's of course not saying much but still, when I read some crazy headline I reflect that if it were true the big media outlets would be all over it because it would draw viewers/readers and advertising dollars.
