Can you answer this?

If you discuss against a religious belief that you do not hold/follow your self, how can you be sure you are correct and the actual believers and followers of the belief in discussion is wrong?

Maybe listening is better than claiming to know

I am actually more afraid of getting my own faith wrong than others'. Then I have both misinformed others and myself in a way that affects me.

It depends. If I said what you believe about Sufi is wrong, that's just my opinion. Active listening (which discussions should be) is asking things like "how am I wrong....what are your views....I see where you come from."

Listening shows you're interested in the others views not just those that agree or positive.

Nothing wrong with saying you're wrong about what sufi says about X (regardless if you use the word wrong or not)...it's just ones opinion. Trying to prove the other is wrong, I can see that as a problem.

But maybe some get offended when they are told they are wrong when it could be a way to learn about themselves and others religion etc by accepting others views despite their own.

Wrong meaning I don't agree with your perspective not wrong as in you don't know what you're talking about.

It's not about the word itself.

This is to me a true way of seeing it

I don't view religious belief as being right or wrong. If one kid likes bananas and another kid likes apples, who's right, and who's wrong?

It's the same for people who discuss their own religion and offer opinions as if they're universal for followers of that religion when, in fact, there's controversy over various doctrinal areas.

As a Christian, I was convinced from birth that my parents religion was 100% correct. This is how most people are introduced to religious ideas and its why the vast majority of religious people have the same religion as their family. With competing religious claims, I don't think you are actually interested in listening to why other people think their religious views are correct, since you can conclude before they share anything that they are wrong! You can see this all over these message boards. Its totally understandable. It's even implied in the OP statement "maybe listening is better than claiming to know". That is totally true, if you actually don't know and you are asking questions to find out. But when both sides claim to know the truth and our biases come into play, what you are really saying is the other side needs to listen to me, since I know what is true.

Research, study, and experience.

I'll also add that anymore it's a very rare occasion where you will see me discuss against another's belief.

How are we convinced who is right and who is wrong in any argument or debate? It all comes down to the strength of the arguments used.

Are you stating unequivocally that any religious belief is true and should never be questioned or evaluated in any way?
