Can You Tell Someone's Religion By Just Looking?

Whether it is by the way that someone dresses, speaks, looks or by the way they carry themselves. If someone never told you which religion they followed or belonged to, would you be able to tell a person's religion by just looking and interacting with them?

Aside from cases where someone's wearing something like a turban, yarmulke or crucifix that's an obvious sign of a particular religion, I'd say not.

I get the impression that many people assume I'm some sort of Christian.

Excepting the beanies, hats, robes, pendants, logo t-shirts, and collars? (Just wanna be sure.):trampo::D (looks like 9 10th's P. beat me to the punch...LOL)

I would otherwise say it would be hard to tell for sure.

I can usually spot male mormons around here, because it is two guys dressed in black and with back packs. That usually means "MORMONS." Now, of course, while they aren't doing their walking around thing and are just going to class or shopping or something I'm sure I wouldn't be able to tell. But if I see two young guys dressed in black and carrying backpacks, walking together I assume they are probably Mormons.

And then sometimes you can guess what someone's religion is by talking to them, but unless they say it you probably won't know. But I guess that religion where the women wear scarves over their hair, if you see a lady wearing one of those... that probably counts for something. Or someone wearing a cross probably isn't an atheist...

It is often quite easy. Mormons, Muslims and "hardcore" Judaism adepts, among others, often adopt dress styles that make them quite recognizable, sometimes by design.

Kardecists spiritualists usually have strong behavioral signatures that make them easy to recognize as well. It is all a matter of giving them enough time and the right subject matter.

Some (not all) Christians likewise make a point of molding their behavior by their faith.

The thing is, I can dress up as someone who practices any given religion (hairstyles and stuff are a little harder) and make you think I believe certain things or will act in certain ways.

I have no actual desire to do so, of course; but think how many times this is used as a plot device in fiction. I imagine it happens often enough in real life too.

Interesting, Luis. Aside from LDS missionaries, who admittedly are easy to spot anywhere in the world, I don't believe Mormons have a recognizable dress style. Were you referring to Mormon missionaries or to LDS in general? If it was the latter, would you mind clarifying what you meant. I'm kind of curious as to how I should be dressing. I'd like you to be able to recognize me if you were ever to run into me. ;)

It's quite simple.

And by way of comparison, a Unitarian Universalist:

There's much to be said because of nose sizes.

But perhaps that's a topic for another thread.

Missionaries. Although Mormons tend not to dress too agressively, but that's not really enough to guess their faith.

Usually I can spot a church crowd when I see them...especially the Sunday night people who go out to eat after church on Sunday night....Especially the extremely holy ones where the women wear their hair down to their waist or have it in an updo style and usually wear no jewely, make up and long dresses with sleeves....Also the obvious clergy who wear a suit and tie or a clerical collar....And of course the obvious ones who wear some religious artifact to advertise their beliefs...
Usually easier to spot them because they are a dead give away when they shake their heads disaprovingly at our vulgar display of dyed hair, make up and jewelry....;).....
And for Katz, I never noticed most Mormons looking any different than anyone else unless they are radical and not the traditional mormons who are wonderful like the ones on this forum, especially Katzpur.....
