Cannabis boosts risk of stroke and heart attack, independent of tobacco, new study finds

Yes most of my friends who have smoked cannabis over a number of years don't seem to be the same people I knew back then, they are withdrawn and seem to be paranoid.

Hilarious!

To quote.....

"The findings held true after taking into account unhealthy factors known to affect many cannabis smokers, such as obesity, alcohol misuse and smoking.

They indicate there is something intrinsic about cannabis which can damage the proper functioning of the human heart.

"Even when we corrected for known risk factors, we still found a higher rate of both stroke and heart failure in these patients, so that leads us to believe that there is something else going on besides just obesity or diet-related cardiovascular side effects,” said Dr Aditi Kalla, Cardiology Fellow at the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and the study's lead author.

"It's important for physicians to know these effects so we can better educate patients.

Previous research in cell cultures has shown that heart muscle cells have cannabis receptors relevant to contractility, or squeezing ability, suggesting that those receptors might be one mechanism through which marijuana use could affect the cardiovascular system.”

I "suggest" that these "studies" are very suspect especially when vested interests are trying hard to suppress the evidence that cannabis is an excellent medicine with no damaging side effects, when used correctly.

How many big pharma drugs are known to cause heart disease? Seriously!

Alcohol, smoking and obesity were not the only other risk factors......what about the other drugs that cannabis users take? Especially the prescribed ones......this study is a load of baloney.

Only those with a predisposition to mental health issues will develop schizophrenia and would probably have done so on any kind of drug.

No one has ever died from an overdose of cannabis. How many prescription drugs can make that claim. Even paracetamol can be deadly if overdosed.

When will you guys wake up? It's a con that has been successfully blinding the public for decades, but the cat is out of the bag. What else have they been hiding I wonder?

I'd like to read the original study. I've read none that attribute cannabis use to alcohol abuse, and read one a few years ago saying cannabis users are more likely to not be obese. There is also the issue that many users probably did not say they use to their doctors.
I'd trust a medical expert over a stoner's opinion any day.
I know a few who would rather their patients smoke pot than use all the pills they do.

So it's like Caffeine? Affects the heart?
For some it does increase heart rate and blood pressure, but I would not say it's like caffeine because caffeine is chemically addictive and a stimulant, whereas cannabis is neither.

Speaking from plenty of experience, marijuana is much more addictive than caffeine, way more side effects too.

Cannabis boosts risk of stroke and heart attack, independent of tobacco, new study finds

Data taken from more than 1,000 US hospitals found that people who used the drug had a 26 per cent higher chance of suffering a stroke than those who did not, and a 10 per cent higher chance of having a heart attack.

...
They indicate there is something intrinsic about cannabis which can damage the proper functioning of the human heart.

Interesting, although it's hard to draw any firm conclusions, other than "cannabis may be harmful to one's health," which is no great surprise.

I'm not sure what is implied by mentioning tobacco, unless they're trying to suggest that cannabis is more harmful than tobacco, which I would find difficult to believe.

If something not being 100% healthy is a good reason to have it criminalized, then why isn't the anti-cannabis crowd not also pushing for the prohibition of alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, fast food, etc.? You know, things that are even more addictive and have caused far more health problems and death? Don't step up on the soapbox unless your sermon is consistent.

No, the study is important because it refutes the pro marijuana propaganda that marijuana has no ill health effects, and no side effects etc.

I'm pro-legalization, yet I've never heard anyone claim that it was %100 safe with no negative effects, etc.
It is, however, significantly safer and healthier than either alcohol or tobacco, and unlike the aforementioned it also possess medicinal qualities.

If you don't think anyone says marijuana has no ill effects, maybe you should try reading Deeje's posts, among others.
