Capital Punishment

I'm no christian per se, But I do know the christian god agrees with capital punishment. In the bible I believe it says something along the lines of:

If someone does something crazy, kill them and let me judge their actions. If you were wrong in killing them for they were innocent or were temporarily out of place, fear not, for they will be treated accordingly.

Basically even if we do kill someone and in the off chance they turn out to be innocent or temporarily insane, god will be able to know the difference, and they will be "living" a better life in heaven I suppose.

somethin like dat

Who decides what is the greater good? For the greatest number? Careful, this could work out to be totally adverse to what you may be thinking.

These people are mentally unstable and have no place in our society

What if the instability can be cured and the person could become a positive model of society?

If someone gets busted for harmlessly smoking marijuana

If it's a mind altering substance, how is it harmless? This becomes one of those lines that people like to bicker about.

..... But I am definitely capable of killing someone when they deserve it. ....... If someone raped my girlfriend, I would do the dirtiest and most inhumane things to that man.

I just love it when I hear people say presumptions like this.

.....if people knew they were going to be executed as opposed to being thrown into the cosher jail system we have.

People aren't thinking about the punishment when they commit abhorrent crimes, so there is no real deterent IMO. Anyway, why give them an easy way out. I say bring back hard labour. Make them struggle for the rest of their lives while they actually contribute to society.

I'm assuming of course that they have the right person and that there is no doubt..... Videos don't lie.

Although, they don't always paint the whole picture.

im not to sure about capital punishment, because my religion tells me no.......

Religion? Hasn't religion done plenty of killing?

How would that make you any different than the man that raped your girlfriend? I'm not in anyway condoning rape, nor do believe that rapist should receive light sentences for their actions, but I don't believe in the death penalty.

A big problem with the death penalty, as some have mentioned, is that it isn't fool proof. God knows how many people have been put to death because of faulty evidence, poor representation, racism, etc.

There's also the problem of knowing when to apply the death penalty. How does one determine what acts of murder or rape are heinous enough to be punishable by death? I would be much more likely to receive the death penalty for killing a cop than a janitor. I would also be more likely to end up on death row for killing a middle or upper class high school student than a homeless person. This isn't right and is the reason why capital punishment should be abolished.

I'm all about doing things for the greater good. The greatest happiness for the greatest number. I think people have their standards of life too high, and it's burdening the rest of society. I think a form of capital punishment might help some of the problems our country has all around.

The jails are full. The law system needs tons of finances to be supported at this level. These finances come from our tax dollars. If someone is a murderer or a rapist, kill them. If someone molests kids, kill them. These people are mentally unstable and have no place in our society, nor in a place where they leech off our tax dollars. If someone accidently kills someone in a car accident or something, throw them in jail for a while, let them see how their families feel, let them feel guilty for killing someone, if they are mentally stable, they will probably never do it again. If someone gets busted for harmlessly smoking marijuana, or taking unprescribed government pills, give them a fine, or maybe a warning at first. the greedy government is way to involved in things that don't matter much just so they make a quick buck.

Decriminalize things that don't harm others or have not harmed others, buckle down on things that do.

Although I have my own opinions on capital punishment, wouldn't state-supported murder to save taxpayer money be a poor argument to support capital punishment?

Two wrongs don't make a right??? Maybe. As a Buddhist I am against capitol punishment as a human being that has been through "the justice system" (in the USA) I personally know it doesn't always work and some times the innocent get accused and made guilty without a jury of their peers. That being said no one ever killed anyone I knew or loved so.... what can I really say.

Perhaps I have a different viewpoint. I would ask two questions when the prison becomes full. Who has been here the longest? What is the chance of this person hurting anyone on the outside?

If they have a greater chance of hurting someone, they would be executed to make room for the next prisoner. If they pose no threat to society, they should be released.

That's surprisingly logical of you, Rick. *smile*

I don't support capital punishment for several reasons.

The best argument against it, in my opinion, is that there is always the possibility that a person imprisoned for a crime is innocent of their charges.

I would like to know where the "greatest good" is if someone is later found to be innocent of their charges.

It would be my desire for people to wait at least 10 years to be executed. Drug offenders would be released. My opinion is, no victim no crime.

that is very humane making someone wait ten years before you kill them , just in case some new evidence turns up and we may have to release you , because it would be embarrassing if you were a corpse.
which drug offenders would you release the ones that steal to get a fix or the guys in it for the money

I'm on the fence about capital punishment.

In one sense I agree because I also think that murderers, rapists and child abusers deserve to die but on the other hand even though death is a form of punishment, it almost seems like an easy way out for the criminal.
What I mean is that they could be thinking "Hmmmmm, death isn't so bad. At least I won't have to rot in a cell with no light for the next 50+ years..."
I think they should rot for 50 years then if there still alive, give them the chair or injection or however it's done now.

But like you said, if the jails are full then capital punishment doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

i was refering your reference to a quote of alphas which mentioned his religion and you agreed my mistake any way arnt you a jedi master:)
Ahh, I see. :)

I was actually agreeing with the part about being in that person's place (one who's loved one was a victim), rather than the religion.

And yes, I'm a Jedi. :D
