Capitalism or socialism??

We all know a capitalist system gives rise to greed, oppression, and inhumane actions; and so cooperating with God to bring about his Kingdom on earth is a matter of instituting a more socialist economy. A socialist economic system is more in line with the Gospel message. Do you agree or disagree with this?

All systems exhibit these failings, so perhaps no system gives rise to them.
They're just inherent human traits.

Can't help you there, fella.
I've no idea what a god would want if one exists.
But given what human nature is, I doubt that we're intended to be peaceful & fair.

Which Gospel?

Of the two, I prefer Socialism over Capitalism because I feel that it is better to create a system which helps people rather than a system which allows the oppression of people for personal gain.

Overall I disagree with all social constructs.

Hmm......this seems to be presented as being in opposition to capitalism, but it sounds so familiar.
It's a kind of very free capitalism pursued by an outfit I belong to, The Institute For Justice.
They....er, we work to remove governmental barriers to entry for small business types.
It's truly amazing how cartels will work with authorities to restrict competition from newbies.
Crush crony capitalism!

Reading 1 Acts 4:32-35

The community of believers was of one heart and mind,
and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own,
but they had everything in common.
With great power the apostles bore witness
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,
and great favor was accorded them all.
There was no needy person among them,
for those who owned property or houses would sell them,
bring the proceeds of the sale,
and put them at the feet of the apostles,
and they were distributed to each according to need.

Nonsense.

Both systems can become "corrupted".

Idealistically, socialist philosophy sounds good, but the reality is quite different kettle of fish.

Socialists can quite easily become oligarchic system, where instead of having one dictator, you have committee of dictators. Socialism can be just as oppressive and corrupted as any other system.

Are you seriously suggesting that Socialism is devoid of "greed, oppression, and inhumane actions"? I'll take Capitalism, any day of the week - warts and all. Thanks just the same.

In theory, Anarchism is perfect. Trading goods, no money, no government. Of course, humanity is extremely flawed and generally weak / pathetic. We seem incapable of living without leadership or setting up a basic system of morality. Set up a moral system, trade your goods to others for goods you need, if someone breaks the system; retributivism. Kill the killer, rob the thief, torture the torturer, rape the rapist, etc.

Sadly, this can never happen because humanity is incapable of being mentally evolved as a whole. So, I will just survive until I am no longer stuck on this planet with these people any longer (death).

Maybe go with Capitalism with salary caps... that may at least slow the greed a bit, however it would probably increase the corruption.

Although most people are generally good and helpful in nature. There will always be the small percentage of people that will cause the majority of the strife in the world. You can't get rid of them no matter what you try.

I feel that on balance, the Bible tends to promote capitalism.

Although there are some quite socialist sounding phrases and sections in the NT the real crux of the issue for me seems to be the 'respect your master' statement and the lack of clear condemnation of slavery.

This is very capitalistic sounding to me.

However, as many people say, you can take the message of the Gospel either way.

Friend DoP,

In view of your statement:
humanity is incapable of being mentally evolved as a whole.
It means you consider your self to be outside as from the second statement:
So, I will just survive until I am no longer stuck on this planet with these people any longer (death)
The words *these people* makes it appears that you are surviving in a way different from other humans??
So just asked for clarification; if have wrongly understood or the meaning of the words were different and that was................

I don't read the gospel, but I prefer a middle way between capitalism and socialism.
Some kind of system where those who are able and lucky enough can become millionairs, but where those who have problems to earn their living for any reason are provided for by society.

That would be the best type of system to have, however you will still always get those who will step on others to get to the millionaire status and others who will abuse the "social systems" in order to live without having to work. Generally because people tend to not enjoy the crappy jobs that are out there, but which still need to be done. (Many people would prefer to do nothing rather then pick up garbage for example)

Each systems has weaknesses.
In capitalism US style many people have 3 crappy jobs but do not earn enough to pay for health insurance - while others make millions by doing nothing but manipulating the market & speculating in the working power
of those people who have 3 crappy jobs and still are unable to afford health insurance.
