Care for Parents in Islam

Salam and Greetings to All:

One of the highest priorities in Islam, after belief in God, is the love and care for parents.

Q: Where do you find Paradise?

A: "Paradise is at the feet of the mother"

There are many reasons for this highest Islamic priority, but one of the most important ones is that God is Most Merciful and Most Loving.

He wants us to be merciful towards others, especially towards parents and the elderly. He created us, and He loves us and wants us to end our lives surrounded by the love and care of those nearest to us.

This article by Alfwine Mischler, an American Muslim lady, sheds further light on this crucial area of Islamic teaching. It's titled "Paradise At Her Feet":

QUOTE

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"Paradise is at the feet of the mother"

This is variously interpreted to mean that the mother is responsible for teaching her children their religious obligations and good behavior that will win them Paradise; or it may mean that we earn Paradise by serving our mother throughout her life.

Either way, it shows the great esteem, honor and respect that Islam has for mothers. ...

The Qur'an says:

"(Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor.

And out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: ‘My Lord! bestow on them Your Mercy as they cherished me in childhood.’)

(17:23-24)

With all the complicated problems our modern societies face today, including that of an aging population, Islam offers an important social "safety net" for mercy and kindness towards parents and the elderly, which is not related to state pensions or benefits to senior citizens.

There is nothing like human care, love and compassion.

... (to be continued)

All the best

Note that Allah enjoined us to be kind to parents right after He enjoined us to worship Him, which gives an idea of how important is it to treat them with kindness and mercy. Such treatment should be the norm, whether our parents are Muslims or not, for we are ordered to treat all people justly regardless of their belief.

THE MUSLIM AND HIS PARENTS

Treating them with kindness and respect
He recognizes their status and knows his duties towards them
He is kind and respectful towards them even if they are not Muslim
He is extremely reluctant to disobey them
His mother comes first, then his father
He treats his parents’ friends well
How does he show kindness and respect towards them?

“Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess: For Allah loveth not the arrogant, the vainglorious.”

017.023 Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour.
017.024 And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility, and say: "My Lord! bestow on them thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood."

029.008 We have enjoined on man kindness to parents: but if they (either of them) strive (to force) thee to join with Me (in worship) anything of which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not. Ye have (all) to return to me, and I will tell you (the truth) of all that ye did.

031.014 And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.

046.015 We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents: In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) thirty months. At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and attains forty years, he says, "O my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for Thy favour which Thou has bestowed upon me, and upon both my parents, and that I may work righteousness such as Thou mayest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to Thee and truly do I bow (to Thee) in Islam."

046.016 Such are they from whom We shall accept the best of their deeds and pass by their ill deeds: (They shall be) among the Companions of the Garden: a promise! of truth, which was made to them (in this life).

046.017 But (there is one) who says to his parents, "Fie on you! Do ye hold out the promise to me that I shall be raised up, even though generations have passed before me (without rising again)?" And they two seek Allah’s aid, (and rebuke the son): "Woe to thee! Have faith! for the promise of Allah is true." But he says, "This is nothing but tales of the ancients!"

Abu Bakrah Nufay Ibn Al-Harith said;
“The messenger of Allah asked us three times, “shall I tell you the greatest sins? We said, Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said; “Associating partners with Allah and disobeying one’s parents.

The Status of Parents in Islam

Our indebtedness to our parents is so immense that it is not possible to repay it fully.

In lieu of this, it becomes obligatory for us to show the utmost kindness, respect, and obedience to our parents. The position of parents, and the mutual obligations and responsibilities, have been addressed in Islam in great detail. ...

While listening to the story of Imam Abou Hanifa, the founder of the Hanafi school of Jurisprudence, it turned out that after each of the 5 daily prayers he used to make du'aa for his parents and for his teacher, Hammad, with whom he spent 18 years learning each day

New Converts and Their Parents

Q: my parents are not religious at all, and my mom does not believe that God needs to be worshipped, even though she believes in God. How can I let them know that Islam is good? I don't want them to go to Hell.
