Carrier stays in the USA.

I have a question. Would you be okay paying 5%-7% more federal taxes if it meant a country wide relocation/training for workers in the coal industry? This money would go towards relocation of employment, living stipends, and a education curriculum specific to bring them up to speed in a related industry (in this case, energy/power). (This is a specific example because it is relevant to what we brought up a few posts ago.)

As for me? You bet!

Absolutely, because that is a reasonable solution and much more worthy use of tax dollars than some of the things our taxes subsidize. Coal is a different subject and one that merits discussion. I am sickened every time I see film of them leveling entire mountains.

Me too! I just wish more were in support of this. Or maybe they are and the media has us believe otherwise.

Unfortunately subjects such as this have become political (as seen by some of the replies in this thread). Take politics out of the picture and what you have is just common sense solutions. Now we have the problem of people being for or against something, no matter how beneficial it is just because someone in their party didn't come up with it first. Fossil fuels will eventually go away and folks need to be trained in skills to work in the next up and coming industry. But as per this threads subject, we need to keep our jobs here.

Rather it be for jobs than welfare. Besides the fact that under the current administration its almost there anyway. Guess that's ok ?

Not it's not. Remember deficit spending under Regan was horrible.

Clinton and a Republican-led congress was able to successfully produce a budget surplus in the late 90s.

But then Bush Jr and Rep congress came in and ruined it. . . and left us in a terrible space requiring massive stimulus.

And it's still terribly ruined.

If you want to cut taxes to create your economic bubble, fine. But have the guts to cut spending somewhere.

Republicans have failed us all in this regard.

Unbelievable. We have to make it profitable for business to stay here. And no, education wont suffer. Employed people equal taxpayers that fund the system not take it away. Would you rather them be out of work and on welfare? Who do you suppose is going to fund that? There is no down side to keeping people in good paying jobs.

I agree. Obama tried to do something like this for years. . . But responsibly.

What exactly is in this "Deal" anyway? How does he even have the unilateral power to make this happen?

These were some of Obama's attempts to help Trump voters. Every one voted down by a Republican Congress (props to Wrong_on_Internet for the links) :

Trade Adjustment Assistance to retrain workers displaced by free trade: blocked by Republicans.

So yeah, praise Trump for a backdoor deal for which we'll never get the detail of, but you can forget scaling that up in a fiscally responsible way that avoids favoritism and cronyism.

Republicans, of all people, will stop him.

What we are seeing happening over and over again is companies moving operation to other countries, not because they're not able to make things here along with a profit but because investors want a bigger bang for their buck.

Secondly, Carrier is apparently being awarded some tax concessions, so guess who's gonna have to pick up that tab?

Finally, it's typically been the Dems, not the Pubs, who have been more interested in having the government doing some arm twisting in order to keep businesses here.

If they do, then good for the Democrats. I don't care about the label so long as they go to bat for us....Which is what they are all supposed to do.

Don’t be fooled by Trump’s deal to save some Carrier jobs: More than half the jobs will still leave the country, all while taxpayers hand Carrier a package of financial incentives.

Don’t miss the fine print in Trump’s Carrier news

I'm not posting these articles to argue about the merits of the Carrier case, but rather for anyone who is genuinely interested in what's happening -- regardless of whether they want to debate it or not. I think the articles flesh out some aspects of the case.

You could be right, but I hope not.

In the spirit of giving credit where it is due. Carrier, who was going to close its Indianapolis plant and send the jobs to Mexico is now leaving the bulk of those jobs here in the USA
What super special people these Carrier people are. They act almost as if they were incentivized.

I agree, and I'm willing to give Trump a chance. I honestly do hope he succeeds in helping most Americans economically and in other areas as well.

I agree, that would be nice, get rid of corporate tax, environmental, employee, health regulations that send companies fleeing in the first place

but Trump threatened them with the 35% tariff iron curtain if they moved. Credit where it's due, Obama at least allowed Burger King to move HQ to Canada, avoid taxes, operate more efficiently

and I think that's the 1st time I gave him credit for anything!
