Tell me about your favorite cartoons!
Why is something so common & low as the subject of cartoons in the fancy
pants literature forum? Because cartoons are fangorpingtastic, that's why!

First, The Venture Brothers is a favorite of both Dustin & yours revoltingly. It's about super heroes & superviallains in the style of those ultra-violent sci fi 1970s Americanistanian cartoons, but the theme is failure. They're all fundamentally flawed, eg, Doctor Venture is a super scientist who is mind bogglingly inept. His bodyguard, Brock Samson (the Swedish Murder Machine) doesn't so much protect as leaving trails of bodies.

The show also has great over-the-top theme music.

I like Venture Bros., Archer, Family Guy/American Dad/The Cleveland show, Superjail, Drawn Together, and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting about.

Superjail just might be the most violent cartoon ever.
Please pick one & showcase it for the viewing audience!

Shermana

Duckman was one of the best cartoons ever made, it never got overly offensive and the satire and social commentary was just subtle enough, hitting both the Left and the Right.

I wish someone would resurrect it.

Rocky & Bullwinkle was the first great TV cartoon.
This bit was based upon real network objections to an episode wherein Rocky & Bullwinkle were being cooked in a pot.
Ah, the good ole days when cartoons could be insensitive to aboriginal peoples!

Avatar the Last Bender, and sequel Legend of Korra

(Good fantasy setting, neat plot, beautiful animation, especially for Legend of Korra, and very good choreography)

The DC Animated Universe
(Fairly mature themes, unique animation style, good voice acting and a reasonably diverse Justice League.)

Plus, I like a ton of animated movies, like many of the Disney movies (Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Tangled, Lilo & Stitch) and many of the DC superhero movies (Superman vs Doomsday, Wonder Woman, Superman/Batman Apocalypse, Batman Under the Red Hood). I also like some shows like Samurai Champloo and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

Oh yes! DC animated universe all the way!

Wonderwoman animated was really cool, I rememober being very pleasantly surprised. Of course Red Hood gotta be my favorite of the DC animated movies :D . Or well, up there.

Technically Wonder Woman and Red Hood are not part of the DC animated universe (DCAU). They're animated movies by DC.

It's somewhat misleading, but the DCAU doesn't refer to all animated productions of DC comics. It refers to a specific set of shows that all share the same continuity (meaning that they share the same world, what happened in one show is considered to have also happened in another show) and the same producer and art style that ran from 1992 to 2006 and generally progressed as a series of sequels. The shows are Batman the Animated Series and sequels, Superman the Animated Series, Static Shock, Zeta Project, Justice League, and Justice League unlimited, plus four Batman movies. The DCAU draws themes from the comics but often has different takes on the story lines, or entirely new story lines (for example, Doomsday's story line was completely changed compared to the comics). Some characters actually originated in the DCAU and not in the comics (especially Harley Quinn), and were popular enough to become permanent inclusions in later comics.

The rest of the DC movies (like Wonder Woman, Batman Under the Red Hood, and others) are storylines taken directly from the comics and put into movie form, and therefore count as a DC animated production but not part of the "DCAU" as it is called, because they will differ somewhat in their representation of the character, art style, and producer. The same is true for other shows with DC characters like Teen Titans, Young Justice, Batman the Brave and the Bold, and others- they're DC animated shows but are not part of the same continuity, the same shared universe, as the DCAU. They all stand individually on their own.
