What causes people to have too many kids, is it religious fundamentalism or are some people just allergic to contraceptives?

Wow. The title was too amusing to pass up.
But seriously......
On a population level, the main factors tend to be
1. Education level of the females. - which likely is associated with some level of social/political power of the females (i.e. not political/religious oppression as chattel).
....and....
2. Access to birth control. - which means no poverty (both of the family and the community), as well as no religious/political stigma/repression of the use of birth control (i.e. defunded family planning programs, etc...)
But seriously......

No other entertainment available or affordable
I've noticed many reasons.....
1) Kids provide security to parents.
2) Religion...the go forth & overpopulate commandment.
3) Parents like having kids.
4) Serial unintended pregnancies.
And the dumbest reason of all (one which I've heard multiple times).....
5) There should be as many people as possible because it increases
the odds that one of them will be the Einstein who saves the world.
(Really....I've heard this one uncountable times.)

Or I'm more inclined to get into bizarre discussions with them.
Oh and in countries with a social welfare system like here where single parents get govt. support, some produce children to get paid ... one woman i know here produced 5 consecutive children to different men each about 12 - 14 years apart to stay on her benefit.
Does this mean that she did this over a 60 to 70 year period (5x12 & 5x14)?

nah first was marriage 2 kids before divorce
and i think she was 55 when the last one left.

It depends on the context you’re asking about. The implication is that you’re thinking of a general “number of human beings on the planet” kind of thing, in which case it’s questionable whether we are over-populated rather than just bad at sharing and distributing resources.
At the more national and regional level though, there will be short term (hopefully) complications because the social and economic changes that lead to smaller families can take a long time to have an effect on overall population and too quick a shift can lead to demographic problems. I think there are a lot of parts of the world on that path which can led to the overall situation appearing to get worse before it gets better.

My misinterpretation was more fun.
Women have a powerful drive to bear children -- some more than others but generally they have it. I think five was more than my parents could adequately provide for, but they would have had six or seven if health had allowed for it. Many parents have twelve children. Men also desire children although not usually to the same degree, and so there is a lot of natural pressure to maximize population. Moms want babies badly. That is the #1 reason. I think it is fair to call it an eccentricity. Of course there would have to be a strong desire considering how much trouble it is to have and rear a child -- or twelve.

This is a pretty basic ecological question, folks. What causes overpopulation in any species is pretty simple:
- Overpopulation in a species occurs when the birth rate exceeds the death rate by a significant margin such that environmental degradation results.
Religious fundamentalism might be to blame in some cultures. In Genesis the bible says that humans were supposed to become many and fill the earth. That job is clearly done so they need to stop using it as an excuse. Religions that don't use the bible probably have other views.
I would say lack of education, no access to contraceptives and general lack of intelligence are the main problem. Educated people tend to be smarter and make wiser choices.
The other day I saw an interview with a lady that was complaining about how she was a single mother of 6 and she was so miserable because of how poor they are and how she can't provide for the family, etc. 6 children! Seriously, how about closing your legs? Some people are so dumb they shouldn't be able to pass on their low IQ to another human being.
