Meditation is a word like "religion" or perhaps "Christian," there are may definitions and shades of meaning and an almost infinite number of practices and methods.
To me, meditation is a form of prayer, perhaps even a process for enhancing - deepening the prayer experience.
Methodologies include a variety of breathing practices, chanting and use of a facilitator's voice in guided meditations, postures for relaxating the body, focusing on a thought or visualization ... all of these for the simple purpose of stilling the mind, temporarily setting aside the normal flood of thoughts vying for attention and preparing to experience the Silence that is the actual beginning of the meditation experience ... being at One with God, Christ, Holy Spirit ... it is the gateway to the experience to what the KJV called the still small voice ...
So, take a long slow deep breath or two, feel your body relax as you breathe, focus you thoughts on a single thought like There is only God. Or, chant something like All I need is Thee Lord, Thee, only Thee ... This practice can be a way to act upon the instruction of Jesus, "Seek first the kingdom ..."
After a while, try to sit in silence, if for only a few moments ... after this you can begin your prayers (you just might find your prayers to be somewhat didfferent by having sought first the kingdom).
