Charlie Brown Banned

Well, a prison is government property and people do not want anything to do with religion on government property and Christmas is about religion,. Therefore no book about Christmas because the prisoners who do not believe in Christmas might be offended and the display of religious material on government property is not allowed.

The Emperor of Mankind

Currently the galaxy's spookiest paraplegic
The article notes it's the pop-up edition of A Charlie Brown Christmas that is banned. Perhaps the mail room personnel thought something in it could be used as a weapon. Worse, the article says that Shakespeare is banned. Dave Barry's comment was right on target.

"Is this a shank I see before me?"

You know how you avoid having your books monitored and censored in prison?
don't go to prison

You say that as if you could never go down for unpaid parking tickets or some hilarious misunderstanding when leaving a bar. Particularly in a world where some departments have quotas and the prison lobbyists have every reason to fill their prisons since the government pays them for every prisoner they take.

Well, a prison is government property and people do not want anything to do with religion on government property and Christmas is about religion,. Therefore no book about Christmas because the prisoners who do not believe in Christmas might be offended and the display of religious material on government property is not allowed.

Too bad most of them are in private prisons.

No wait, even if it's a public prison (at least in the USA) that isn't how the separation of Church and State works... banning something religious in a prison is what the separation is about.

There's 9,999 other books banned as well. What's the story with them?
They all are banned for various reasons.
  • Information on the manufacture of explosives, weapons and/or drugs.
  • "Material that a reasonable person would construe as written solely for the purpose of communicating information designed to achieve the breakdown of prisons through offender disruption," like strikes or riots.

  • "Graphic presentations" of illegal sex acts, "such as rape, incest, sex with a minor, bestiality, necrophilia or bondage."
  • Sexually explicit images. "Naked or partially covered buttocks" does not constitute reason for automatic disapproval. Staff review medical journals, reference materials, art books and other publications containing nudity on a case-by-case basis.
  • Information on criminal schemes or "how to avoid detection of criminal schemes."
The book can also be banned for how it's manufactured. If the binding, cover or other parts can be used to hide contraband, it won't be allowed.

They should show them the Mrs Brown Boys series. It would at least give them a laugh or two(not that I have ever seen it! )

The restriction I know of in my state is you have to buy the book and have it directly shipped from the store to the inmate. I don't remember any wacky restriction on titles.
