Child Benefit in UK - scrap or not?

it's not a punishment at all.

the idea of benefits is to help the poor , not to provide a bonus for the rich.

What would be the purpose of giving a state benefit to someone that didn't need it?

I have no idea.
You gonna have to ask the people who set up that way.

However, the rich are receiving it and to take it away simply because they are rich is punishing them simply because they are rich.

I have to agree if you don't need it then why receive it? Benefits should be for people who make the effort but still need help, not people who living well without. It makes absolutely no sense to give tax payer money to those who are not in need. It makes sense when put in the context of when it was originally passed, but if you don't need the monetary assistance it's a waste of government funds.

The problem for the government is that if they stop it for people earning over 40K than a couple earning 39K each, total 78K between them ... get it But a single parent earning 40K does not.

This is the argument at the moment.

The tax department says that they can nor lump them both together because the system is not set up that way.

I don't think people on £40,000 per year are going to miss it much, but I love the idead of the middle classes out rioting over 20 quid a week. So, aye, lets cut it.
