Children "witches" tortured.

That's terrible what they do to those kids, especially when nothing is really wrong with them. But it's great that their government is stepping in and putting up biiiig punishments for continuing this treatment.

Pastors have been accused of worsening the problem by claiming to have powers to recognize and exorcise "child witches," sometimes for a fee, aid workers said.

But some are true believers, such as one minister in Lagos, Nigeria. He pinpoints children affected by witchcraft for free, he said.

"Sometimes, we get a dream that shows us a certain person is suffering from witchcraft," said the Rev. Albert Aina, a senior pastor at Four Square Gospel Church. "Sometimes, you have a child who has inexplicable body marks because of struggling in the night. They are easy to identify, but why charge when you have been given a gift by God?" Aina said. ...

But, he added, there is more work to be done, and other groups, especially churches, have to team up to resolve the problem.

"The role of the international Christian community in this cannot be underestimated," Foxcroft said. "Unfortunately, the fact remains that this belief system is being spread by so-called Christians."
So much for the civilizing influence of Christianity.

That's terrible what people do under the guise of religion.

It seems funny (in a bad way) that logic and "magic" do not go together at all here. If you lock up a witch, why can't said witch escape, or use their magic on their captors?

People are stupid therefore they result to the following actions, religion has nothing to do with the foolishness of people.

eh, we are fairly enlightened over here in america, and we take for granted that they will be over in other countries as well. It's foolish superstitious nonsense, but they don't know any better. Not that not knowing better makes it right, but you can't hate them for it.

oh, in defense of my comment about our so called enlightenment, i know we do stupid things as well, so don't call me on that.

What the F***! That is AGGREGIOUS!

I despise superstition.... and lately stupid ignorant people... more and more....

YOu tell me. Who are the evil ones here.
the christians? or the (supposed) witches.
Beating these poor children!
Taking their clothes off tying them up and beating them?!
Starved and tortured for gOd's sake.:( ***.
If any group of witches ever did anything like this to a christian child...
you all would be using much stronger language than "pretty sad" or "stupid".

no offence. But the double standard is insidious.

This is not the actions of the Christians, you cannot blame Christians for this. Its simply retarded people, not Christians.

Actually, come to think of it, I believe this is all a human interpretation of what all animals do. Whenever there's a perceived defect in one of the litter, the parent or siblings will attack and usually kill that offspring. So, since we're human beings and have consciences, we really have to convince ourselves of some other reason that there is something "wrong" with said individual in order to do such things to them. "They're evil." "They'll destroy us." "They're a threat."

Well said.

It is being done by Christians, who are not retarded, but are acting in accord with their religious beliefs.

No, I agree with her. Kinda like how most Christians I know get offended when you use the words "Christian mythology." Double standard. Though I agree with you that people are naturally stupid and ignorant, it seems very common in the monotheistic religions.

Insulting and blaming a group of people for certain actions, especially when it is not their fault is simply called ignorant out-casting. And the Christian religion simply does not support any kind of genocide or conflict and also war. So please people, Stop blaming the Christians and stop blaming the religions when actions like these occur. It is simply the foolishness of men that leads to these events.

Did you actually READ the article?

"Children accused of witchcraft are often incarcerated in churches for weeks on end and beaten, starved and tortured in order to extract a confession," said Gary Foxcroft, program director of Stepping Stones Nigeria, a nonprofit that helps alleged witch children in the region.

Pastors have been accused of worsening the problem by claiming to have powers to recognize and exorcise "child witches," sometimes for a fee, aid workers said.

"When you are possessed, you are possessed; no one can deliver you from Satan," Eshiett said, adding that his grandson is a witch because he still exhibits unruly behavior and does not take education seriously

"The role of the international Christian community in this cannot be underestimated," Foxcroft said. "Unfortunately, the fact remains that this belief system is being spread by so-called Christians."

Thank gOd for this.....

"Government officials also have joined the fight.
Akwa Ibom recently added a clause into the Child Rights Act, saying that anyone found guilty of branding a child a witch would get up to 12 years in prison".

I'm not blaming the religions themselves, as their founding was probably with good intentions. What I'm blaming is the fact that said stupid people use it as a tool to enact their fears and prejudices against others.

On second thought... while I'm glad the law protects the children...
WHY CAN'T PEOPLE LIVE AS WITCHES IF THEY WANT TO!
OPENLY! Without fear of ignorant people abusing or slandering them!

Even here it is a societal risk to share that you are a witch publicly.
Some will brand you evil... the rest will brand you a fool.
Yet neither group will dare... or bother.... to find out what you are REALLY all about.

Saying that Christians and the Christian religion is responsible for this is a nonsense idiocy; it is like saying that the Muslims are responsible for terrorism, and that black people are responsible for crime. It simply makes you a racist, an ignorant fool and a person who is consumed by hatred. In two words, you are nothing less from the people who torture the kids, you are becoming one of them.
