  • Do our choices create who we become?

Here is a poll, about how you view choices. Hopefully something can be learned by this.

I am presenting three choices in the poll, and feel free to elaborate, because I want to find out what everything thinks is the determining factor in how we label our choices.

The three choices are (please select from the poll as well)

  1. Do our choices reveal who we are?
  2. Do our choices create who we become?
  3. Is it a blend of both?
And again, how do we tell the difference?
Also, for some extra thought, do you find the subject of choice is much more complicated than what is outlined here?

i voted 2...but then i thought of something.
can you clarify one thing though...
reveal to whom ourselves or others?

Fatalist. Christian. Pacifist.
Without the external to interact with, there wouldn't be choice or change. Blend of both.

Well this answer can only be subjective.

However, I would be inclined to say to ourselves.

As it is ourselves we must face in the mirror and ultimately affirm to the reflection that we are either the sum total of our past choices and circumstances, or that who we are has not yet been revealed because the process of choice has not yet ended.

Hard to answer your question, so tell me why you ask?

then #2 it is for me. when we make choices, depending on how we feel about them, would help create what we would become...we may not make the same choice again.

for me subjective in this case is external...others looking in.

i disagree.
ultimately, one has to live with themselves and the choices they make for themselves depending on what they think/feel not by being dependent to the interaction of the external. it's all internal.

One interesting aspect to this, is even though we are often aware choices will effect our lives, it still bites us in the rear end.
I personally have scratched my head asking why did I make that choice? Of course this is after time has gone on, and I can see why those choices were wrong, bad or whatever.

There is no absolute self. There are genetic predispositions. There are persistent thoughts. To say that our actions reveal who we are would mean there is something beyond these two things.

Then again, if "who we are" is defined as "how we are currently thinking", then absolutely our choices are a reflection of our current thoughts.
