Christ According To The Mormons

Will to love
Unfortunately I chose to begin my reign of terror here on RF by hitting all the active posts that came up, rather than dropping down from the home page by organized sections. I got one of my posts zapped from the Islam section too, but it wasn't quite as traumatizing.
Yes, as I said to Katz I've been zapped in the DIRS too. Anyway, if yours is a reign of terror then terror has become more interesting. :D

As I indicated in some of my earliest posts on this forum, we welcomed some missionaries to our home a number of months ago. They left a BoM on their second visit, and I read the entire thing in two weeks, and there has been extensive follow-up study. Since the LDS Church has seen fit to fellowship with me in real life, I thought I could complement this with online study, but I was disqualified from posting in the LDS DIR, and there has been further stumbling today in the Debate section. I will have to ask my Father in heaven what to do now, by taking advantage of the close relationship I have with him in prayer.
My wife is a former Catholic who converted to the LDS faith. I mention this because I noticed you're also Catholic. :)

Great to have you on the forum. You'll be a great addition.

I enjoy reading your posts.

It took me a year or two to figure out the rules here, never really read them, just winged it, not good. We all have infractions, no worries, keep posting in the LDS DIR forum, we want to hear from you.

This thread is GREAT! After the first page I had to read the rest. Overstanding's first post was hilarious. If the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was actually like what he described we wouldn't have lasted two days. Especially with the time paradox of having Josph Feilding Smith translating the Book of Mormon. I can see it now. Joseph Feilding Smith builds a time machine. Then he travels back in time stops Joseph Smith Jr. from entering the sacred grove and has the First Vision himself. Then he.....Sorry I just can't go on, it's too crazy for even me to type.

What I can't stand is the whoe Mormons are/were racist. Just becasue 'blacks' weren't allowed to hold the priesthood. What about asians, or latinos, or inuets, or any of the other dozens of races? During the times of Moses only the tribe of Levi could hold the preisthood. Was God being 'tribist' against the other tribes? Not everyone has to do the exact same thing as everyone else.

And dark skin as a sin of being sinful? That's the biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard! I'm caucasian and my fiancee is a Filipina. I LOVE her dark skin. She's has a greater desire to be righteous than many 'white' people I know. And if she has to loose her dark skin to be exalted than I'd rather skip out on the whole exaltation thing. That's what I believe as a Mormon!

Why hasn't The Mormons been learning The Ancient language that Joseph F . Smith obviously know
Excuse me Overstanding, before I start hurling insults I have to know:

Is English your native tongue? (that means, "do you speak English").

Hmm, now I am wondering if Overstanding isn't actually a "plant", lol. He sure makes Mormonism look good by comparison, doesn't he?

You're not serious are you? It's like saying Joseph Smith didn't engage in polygamy. Actually there was a racist doctrine, but it shouldn't be anything to hide as it's not the church's doctrine now. I think it would be more deceptive or unethical to try and deny it than to just say it is part of the church's past, and let it go at that.

"You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind.
The first man that committed the odious crime of killing one of his brethren will be cursed the longest of any one of the children of Adam. Cain slew his brother. Cain might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings.

This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin. Trace mankind down to after the flood, and then another curse is pronounced upon the same race--that they should be the "servant of servants;" and they will be, until that curse is removed."
Brigham Young-President and second 'Prophet' of the Mormon Church, 1844-1877- Extract from Journal of Discourses.

So, considering the above (and more like it, plenty more where that came from) there WAS racism in the church. The LDS was not the only religion infested with the racist virus, our entire country was affected and we shouldn't shy away from discussing it honestly. It was there as doctrine, it's not now, end of story.

Well I agree. I think a racist mentality was te culture back then. What I meant to say was that I disagree with the church's doctrine having a racist intent. While church leaders may have held racist views, as was common back then, the churches doctrine was not meant to be racist.

A little off topic but I actually believe that Cain's curse is where the neanderthals came from. But of course I don't really have anything to support this belief.

End of story? Well, I'll believe that when I see it. There absolutely WAS racism in the Church and it would be absurd to deny it. There were racist people (including some in high leadership positions), there were racist practices and policies and racist excuses for these practices and policies. There was not racist doctrine. But to someone who is unable to distinguish between policy and doctrine, I guess it wouldn't matter much.

People are afraid of what they don't understand, and there was much that ancient people did not understand. When you consider that humans used to blame every natural and celestial event on their gods and then the one God it's not at all surprising that some ancient tribal holyman or priest did attempt to explain different skin color as a curse from above.

I'm a novice about Mormon history but isn't the Book of Mormon essentially a written copy of the golden plates that Joseph Smith was allowed to see? Perhaps the golden plates were carved by an ancient priest who, on his own, thought the black skin must have been a curse from God?

chuckles...there were no Golden plates, that's already been proven in earlier threads.

Those of us with a BoM and have read and looked for ourselves disagree with you.
I know I do and I am not a Mormon.
Therefore you seem to be merely blowing all manner of {insert proper noun here} out your backside.

Seems to me you are talking a lot of crap and not backing any of it up with anything other than more crap.

But perhaps it is just me....
