We have the Fundamentalist Atheists thread wherein atheists annoy us more than any other group, and now this.

I ping pong back and forth in annoyance with both groups. Don't see much difference between the two ;)

From the link:
"Some Christian extremists are advocating for the reinstatement of blasphemy laws in order to punish Bill Maher for his recent remarks describing God as “a psychotic mass murderer” and a baby killing tyrant."

All the other stupidity aside, there's the fact that a newly enacted law cannot be applied retroactively.

I offer a compromise to these anti-blasphemy law fans.
They can have Bill Maher, & whip him to their hearts' content,
so long as the leave the less annoying heathens alone.

Oh please. Why is it that these people are always whining about their rights being taken away and yet want to deny others their rights?
Were Bill Maher's remarks on public television offensive, abrasive, crude and insensitive towards the faith of millions upon millions of people in this country? Yes. Should he be tied up and whipped for it? No, it's called freedom of speech. Should Christians be advocating this, when Jesus told us to bless those who curse us and put up with all insults? Dear God, no!!! :thud:

There's so much I want to say about this, but don't really have the patience for it anymore. So all I'll say is this: this is stupidity at it's best (worst).

I disagree with any sort of anti-blasphemy laws, or any laws limiting free speech on the basis of it being offensive.

Bill Maher, I find annoying, mean-spirited and I think his show is/was complete garbage -- like a lot of stuff on TV.

I found that once I realized his show was particularly annoying to me, even when I was flipping channels -- it prompted me to look at everything I was paying extra for with HBO, and I found most of that to be garbage, too. A simple solution for me was to reduce the amount of garbage I had to sift though when flipping through channels by simply cancelling my HBO subscription and not paying extra for more garbage.

Obviously these so called Christians who are calling to bring us back to such a primitive mindset are a very small minority, and nothing to worry about, just ignore them.

I don't think it'll ever come to pass. Over here Christians wanted a comedian called Steward Lee prosecuted for Blasphemy after his stage play Jesus Christ: Superstar. The case, however, was thrown out. Presumably on the grounds that we don't live in 1508.

But...but....Game of Thrones. :(

I agree it isn't right to want to punish Mr. Maher (people are entitled to their opinion, no matter how insensitive it is). He wasn't just insulting those extremists, but anyone who follows that faith. I've learned to just ignore that kind of talk, though.

My beliefs are even more primitive yet (animism)...as in spanning all the way back to the time before religion itself even came into existence. And I like it that way...no religion. Science will figure things out anyway.

It makes me wonder if they ever even read the New Testament.
