Oscar winner, ‘Sound of Music’ star Christopher Plummer dies (apnews.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Christopher Plummer, the dashing award-winning actor who played Captain von Trapp in the film “The Sound of Music” and at 82 became the oldest Academy Award acting winner in history, has died. He was 91.

Plummer died Friday morning at his home in Connecticut with his wife, Elaine Taylor, by his side, said Lou Pitt, his longtime friend and manager.

Over more than 50 years in the industry, Plummer enjoyed varied roles ranging from the film “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” to the voice of the villain in 2009′s “Up” and as a canny lawyer in Broadway’s “Inherit the Wind.” In 2019 he starred as murdered mystery novelist in Rian Johnson’s whodunnit “Knives Out” and in the TV suspense drama series “Departure.”

Rest in peace.

Some of those people in the audience looked like they couldn't wait for that song to be over.

R.I.P. Mr. Plummer

Yes, they were waiting for the performance to be over so they could take Captain Von Trapp to become an officer in the German Navy.

Depends upon whom you ask. In Sound of Music its a theme written against the Nazis, but in Amazon's The Man in the High Castle its Hitler's favorite theme. So its controversial. :p

I am about as anti-Trump as one can get but I do not see his abuse of the song making it controversial and was "The Man in the High Castle" a dramatization? I need something much more than that before I would call it controversial. I would rather go with the Sound of Music interpretation.

EDIT: And I know that the escape of the VonTrapps was highly dramatized.

Its actually not controversial. The Man in the High Castle is a recent popular series which postulates an alternative universe in which the Axis powers conquered the word and divided up the USA into a Japanese portion and a German portion. In that series the song Eidelweiss is the theme of the show.

They were probably thinking they should have grab him before he started singing.
In the movie, yes.

  • The family did not secretly escape over the Alps to freedom in Switzerland, carrying their suitcases and musical instruments. As daughter Maria said in a 2003 interview printed in Opera News, "We did tell people that we were going to America to sing. And we did not climb over mountains with all our heavy suitcases and instruments. We left by train, pretending nothing."

Oh, he was trying to lull them with that song so he could make his getaway.

Yes, just keep telling yourself that. You will be happier than if you clicked on the spoiler.
Actually, it was a very enjoyable movie, I particularly liked this one:

She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee
Her dress has got a tear
She waltzes on her way to Mass
And whistles on the stair
And underneath her wimple
She has curlers in her hair
I even heard her singing in the abbey

She's always late for chapel
But her penitence is real
She's always late for everything
Except for every meal
I hate to have to say it
But I very firmly feel
Maria's not an asset to the abbey

I'd like to say a word in her behalf
Maria... makes me...laugh

How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
A flibbertigibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!

Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay
And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand?

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

When I'm with her I'm confused
Out of focus and bemused
And I never know exactly where I am
Unpredictable as weather
She's as flighty as a feather
She's a darling! She's a demon! She's a lamb!

She'd out pester any pest
Drive a hornet from its nest
She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle! She is wild!
She's a riddle! She's a child!
She's a headache! She's an angel!
She's a girl!

Forget the sound of music, he made a wonderful Klingon, a role model for all Klingons to follow

Sad loss...
