Hey guys, I need your help! I'm doing a project for a class on climate change and it would mean so much to me if you could take just a few minutes to answer a few questions.

You can answer the first set in just a few words but the second set need a few sentences. If you answer any, please please answer all of them, otherwise I won't have all the info I need. Bullet points are fine if you want. To show my thanks, everyone who takes my little survey gets a like!

Do you think that climate change is happening?

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?

Do you think the issue is important?

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?

----------

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?

Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?

Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?

--
Please no debating! The point of this thread isn't to try to prove our sides, but so that I can get a feel for the atmosphere of positions on the issue.

Thank you so much!

Human activity.

Do you think the issue is important?
Yes.

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?
Yes. Recycle, not much more I personally can do.

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
The Norse tended to view the planet as most people of the time did; something you tamed if you could but otherwise left alone. Extrapolate that out and you could say that they encouraged the idea of rational exploitation of resources. Don't take so much you leave nothing for those who come after you.

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?
If you really wanted you could draw parallels with the increasing severity of seasons & storms to the notion of 'Fimbulvetr', a time where the world experiences three continuous winters that is supposed to be one of the check-marks for Ragnarok, but that feels like you're grasping. As far as regards anything else, the Norse beliefs more revolved around how you treated people, not so much how you treated the world around you. You could, of course, argue that due to this it's better not to wreck the environment, because more than yourself is at stake.

Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?
The Norse were big on personal responsibility for the future, specifically in how your actions would effect those coming after you. Response to climate change is just this taken to a much larger scale.

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?
No? Never been anti-science regardless of whatever my faith was, even when I was nominally Christian as a child.

Yes.

Probably at least mostly responsible.
Do you think the issue is important?
Perhaps the most important issue facing us today.
Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?
I do what I can, though some steps are much easier to take than others.
To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
In a pseudo-religious sense, to me the Earth and environment is sacred. I can't answer the question from a conventional notion of religion. But I would say it is of the utmost moral and ethical imperative to start taking significant leaps in taking actions to ameliorate global warming.
Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?
I wouldn't call it a belief, but a fact that the Earth and it's many environments support all life. This fact drives why I find the issue so important.
Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?
None of the above - my views have been formed by science and philosophy
Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?
When I was religious, it wasn't a very big deal because it was "just God's plan anyways." After I put all that aside I began to realize how dire of a situation we are actually in, and it has nothing to do with a god but the foolishness of men.
Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?
I tend to not like having faith.

Yes - reduced consumption of electricity by installing LED lights and only use what we really need (I am hoping to install solar panels soon); reuse and recycle as much as we can including composting all organic waste (means we don't have to buy factory-made fertilizers for our large garden); walk (4 miles) home from work most afternoons (mostly for health but it means I don't use fuel as well);

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
Taking care of our internal and external 'environment' are the key elements of our spiritual lives (my wife and I) - I can best describe my beliefs as a form of 'religious naturalism' - we try our best to minimize our negative impact on our environment.

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?

Individual beliefs/practice - I have no religious affiliation.

Yes - I no longer believe that God is going to fix it for us.

Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?
Closest ready-made labels would be 'religious naturalism' or a kind of 'naturalistic pantheism'.

Do you think that climate change is happening?
Yes. All the scientific evidence is overwhelming that it is.
Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?
The vast majority is human caused because it's correlated with human activity.
Do you think the issue is important?
Yes it's important
Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?
We can't stop it but we can moderate it in many different ways. I drive a PEV, plugin electric car. We use LED lights and have a very fuel efficient furnace etc. In other words, we do commonsense and easy things.
----------

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
The Earth is in a sense our mother and we should take good care of her. That extends far beyond climate change and into every area of life. I don't claim to great virtue here in my actions but my heart says this is how we should increasingly live our lives.
Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?
Yes because I believe God is in charge and has created a "breeze" that is influencing events.
Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?
This is a question I have a hard time answering without writing a book. Maybe the best way of answering it in a nutshell is that I find it meaningful to find God in nature and by honoring nature I honor God.
Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?
Not really. My beliefs have not changed in a long time.

I am a follower of Avatar Meher Baba and not of any particular faith tradition. But Meher Baba indicated that any of the great religious traditions lead to God if followed with an open and loving heart. His colophon expresses that

Do you think that climate change is happening?
When has it not been happening? Change is what climate does.

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?
More correctly you are meaning Anthropogenic Climate Change which should be a bit of a no brainer. We are a part of the eco system, so it would be ridiculous to say we are not part of the equation. How big a part is the real question.

Do you think the issue is important?
To me, personally, it is somewhat low on my priority list.

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?
You would never want to stop climate change LOL. That would cause our extinction in fairly short order. What I imagine you are meaning is to try to curtail man's impact on the climate. I recycle, drive only when I must. Shorten arguments so we are not belching too much hot air for too long. I have many trees on the property and am a conscientious care giver. Likewise we grow some veggies and other stuff. I do it because I want to not because I think it will erase the carbon footprints of others.

----------

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
No influence whatsoever. Not applicable.

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?
I suppose. I'm simply not that concerned about other people's massive carbon footprints as my lifetime footprint is rather insignificant. When folks toss away their car keys we can talk.

Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?
Not in the slightest.

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?
Not a lot, no. When humanity actually gets off their collective butts to "do something" about it, I might pay closer attention.

Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?
Those who can see don't need faith. I suppose, if you insisted, you could describe me as a modern mystic.

I see weather patterns changing, hence the climate. Studies have shown already those changes that have been and are presently occuring.

While humans are contributers which affects climates, I am led to think there are more natural and astronomical factors in play that affect climate trends so no, I don't think humans are completely responsible. Maybe in part, but not entirely.

I think the issue remains importaint enough that we should act responsibly and accordingly to changing conditions. We can still do our part as it stands to lessen our involvment in muddying up our air and water.

I would say conservation and renewal of our resources would go a long way in making a better and healthier way of life. It's horrible in how much we are actually a throw away society.

I practice a form of Zen Buddhism and while things like climate change and such don't play a significant role in how I practice and follow my form of religion, it's always a good thing to be aware, mindful, and help make right choices that benefit not only yourself, but oftentimes other people, which tend to be cases lead by example, such actions eventually do propagate and spread as people discover many benefits and find such things to be more enjoyable and of a better quality as an end to a means.

Do you think that climate change is happening? - Yes

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all? Full.

Do you think the issue is important? Highly, the existence of our species, and a myriad of animals is at stake.

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what? I do not eat fish, i refrain from littering, and i support various environmental activists.

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it? Not highly. Really, i take a secular stance when it comes to these issues.

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue? They do, and they make me think of the long term future of the earth, not of humanity. Even though i'd someone begrudingly call myself an anthropocentrist.

Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three? No, i had a secular upbringing.

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how? My religious views have changed, but my stance on climate change has not, i still find it as important as ever.

Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with? Hinduism :D

Thank you so much! No problem :D

Hey guys, I need your help! I'm doing a project for a class on climate change and it would mean so much to me if you could take just a few minutes to answer a few questions.
Good morning.

Do you think that climate change is happening?
Yes, I do. Furthermore, one Wikipedia source notes:

The scientific opinion on climate change is the overall judgment among scientists regarding the extent to which global warming is occurring, its causes, and its probable consequences. The scientific consensus is that the Earth's climate system is unequivocally warming, and that it is extremely likely (meaning 95% probability or higher) that this warming is predominantly caused by humans. It is likely that this mainly arises from increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as from deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels, partially offset by human caused increases in aerosols; natural changes had little effect.

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?
I accept the consensus of science which (as quoted above) holds that "it is extremely likely (meaning 95% probability or higher) that this warming is predominantly caused by humans."

Do you think the issue is important?
I believe the issue to be critically important. Climate change threatens catastrophic impact on habitat that will destroy untold numbers of human lives and drive many species to extinction.

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?
Great question.
The brief answer is yes, but not enough. Mine is a threefold approach:
  1. be informed - embrace the science,
  2. be politically active - campaign* for food justice in our government's international food aid programs; identify and oppose egregious polluters and those who would deregulate them, and
  3. reject egregious consumerism - seek to buy less product and focus of those which are locally produced.
* See, for example, the AJWS and the U.S. Farm Bill.

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
Reform Judaism considers it to be extremely important. We are to be stewards of the land committed to the pursuit of justice. One article from ReformJudaism.org notes:

Judaism emphasizes our need to preserve our natural resources and generate new ones for future generations. The Talmud tells the story of the sage Choni, who was walking along a road when he saw a man planting a carob tree. Choni asked, "How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?" "Seventy years," the man replied. Choni then asked, "Are you so healthy that you expect to live that length of time and eat its fruit?" The man answered, "I found a fruitful world because my ancestors planted it for me. Likewise, I am planting for my children." In fact, tradition values this concept so much that the rabbis teach that if a man is planting a tree and the messiah appears, he should finish planting the tree before going to greet him (Avot d'Rebbe Natan 31b).
Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?
Yes. I believe in the cogency of science, the pre-eminence of the golden rule, and the importance of the Deuteronomy 16:20 mandate: tzedek, tzedek tirdof (justice, justice you will pursue)!

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?
No. My respect for science and embrace of our collective responsibility to pursue justice have remained constant.

Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?
I am a Jew. My synagogue is associated with the Union for Reform Judaism,

Thank you so much!
You're welcome.

Do you think that climate change is happening?

Yes. We know that it is (data below)

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?

It appears to be all or almost all anthropogenic (manmade). There isn't really any practical distinction between 95% and 100% anthropogenic.

Do you think the issue is important?

Yes, one of the most important of our age.

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?

I have eliminated my carbon footprint. My home is 100% solar powered except for a tank of propane a year for the range and outdoor grill, down from 4 tanks a year before we had solar water heating (dishwasher, shower, washing machine).

And I live in a village where I walk almost everywhere, We have driven under 1000 miles a year for the last 7+ years, which is about five tanks of gasoline a year.

What makes the carbon footprint close to zero is that we harvest and deliver more power than we consume, which reduces the utility's need to bur fossil fuels, hopefully by as much as we still burn.

In about 18 months, we will have recovered our up front expenditures ($8000 at the time, less today) and begin enjoying free power.

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?

I am an atheist. I have no religious views unless you count the way I view religion. I consider it dangerous to be continually undermining the confidence in science and scientists and encouraging faith based thought about such matters. The church is assaulting evolution theory, but the continual demeaning of science undoubtedly bleeds over into climate change opinions, which also seem to be faith based for so many.

Then there's this: "We don't have to protect the environment, the Second Coming is at hand" - James Watt, Secretary of the Interior under Reagan

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?

Yes. I believe that the climate scientists' warning are credible and should be taken seriously. They are not telling us exactly what will happen or when. They're tell us that we are taking a great risk.

Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?

My views on climate change are shaped by becoming aware of the evidence outlined below, and by the consensus of climate scientists and scientific organizations, all of which are in accord.

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?

My religious beliefs haven't changed since I first heard of this issue.

Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?

I have no faith.

The evidence

Regarding global climate change, we have a sea of evidence that we can examine ourselves and come to our own conclusions. We not only have CO2 ppm counts graphed at Climate Change: Climate Resource Center - Graphic: The relentless rise of carbon dioxide , we have the temperature trending. From Instrumental temperature record - Wikipedia

"15 of the top 16 warmest years have occurred since 2000. March 2016 was the hottest month on record, making it the 11th month in a row of global high temperature records. 2015 was not only the warmest year on record, but broke the record by the largest margin by which the record has been broken. 2015 was the 39th consecutive year with above-average temperatures."

Then we have the various proxies for warming: Melting ice caps, changing migration patterns, changing sea levels, the bleaching of coral reefs, the frequency and severity of extreme weather events (droughts, floods, blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes), changing ocean currents (surface and deep water temperatures, current directions and speeds, and salinity levels), something called phenology (the date of the first winter freeze and the spring thaw, when trees bud and lose their leaves, the behavior of various insects [apparently the rate at which crickets chirp is a reliable indicator of current temperature]. NCAR Online Education: What Is Indirect Evidence of Climate Change? - Windows to the Universe

After all, it's not the temperature per se that is the problem, but the effects it has on these proxy indicators of climate change, and we are already seeing them.

Do you think that climate change is happening?

Yes

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?

Fully caused by human activity

Do you think the issue is important?

Yes it is an existential threat to our species

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?

I am a minimalist with consumption. I use public transportation, walk or bike everywhere I need to go. I tell my friends about the importance of climate change and I regularly discuss it online. I recycle a lot and I am a vegetarian twice a week.

I don't think it can be stopped at this point however. I've started learning to prep when I can, and have found a group of friends who share the same beliefs as me. I think we are past the point where our climate can go back to what it was. We are heading into very dangerous future.

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?

My religion strongly influences my beliefs because my religion highly reveres nature.

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?

Partly, I think I would maybe feel a bit less worried if I believed in an all powerful watchful God.

Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?

Some combination of the three.

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?

I've become more aware of the beauty of nature as I've gotten older. I believe my views have become more pro environmentalist as I've become more religious.

Do you think that climate change is happening?
Yes.

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?
Largely.

Do you think the issue is important?
Very.

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?
Yes, largely through various conservation efforts that my wife and I employ, such as buying energy-efficient items, not leaving devices on that are not needed at that time, doing more walking to stores than driving, etc.

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
Somewhat as there are biblical mandates to treat Earth and what's on it with care.

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?
Somewhat, but religious beliefs need not be necessary to feel the need to take better care of what we have.
Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?
My main orientation is science, which has been the main driving force for me on this and many other topics.

No.

Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?
I'm very ecumenical, but officially I identify more with liberal Judaism.

Do you think that climate change is happening?
Certainly
Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?
Mostly
Do you think the issue is important?
The most important issue.
Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?
Vegetarian. No children. I do recycle, but that's nothing compared to the first two.
----------

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?
Earth is sacred.
Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?
??? Doesn't belief determine one's assessment of every issue?
Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?
None of these, really. The facts are the facts, and our planet is all we have.
Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?
Nope.
Also, if you don't have your religion listed, which faith would you say you most closely identify with?
Not particularly religious, but identify with Hinduism.

Please no debating! The point of this thread isn't to try to prove our sides, but so that I can get a feel for the atmosphere of positions on the issue.
Atmosphere shmatmosphere.

Do you think that climate change is happening?: Undoubtedly, yes.

Do you think that climate change is caused by human activity in full, in part, or not at all?: In part, but a larger part than half.

Do you think the issue is important?: Absolutely.

Do you do anything to do your part in trying to stop it? If so, what?: Recycling is sadly all I can afford to do. I also use as little paper as possible.

To your knowledge, how do your religious views affect the way you view climate change and whether or not you take actions to fight it?: Nothing directly, but the Earth is seen as the physical embodiment of Jord. As such, the Earth is literally sacred.

Do your beliefs influence how important you find the issue?: Not really, but this is the only home we got. Not finding it important is foolish.

Are your views on climate change shaped by your religious leaders or community (or lack thereof), individual beliefs/practice, religious upbringing, or some combination of the three?: Individual beliefs, if anything.

Have your views changed over time as your religious beliefs have changed, if so, how?: Nope
