Aqualung, it usually boils down to how much you have to spend. As has already been posted, laptops are quite a bit more expensive then desktop models.
Dollar for dollar, you can get a lot more for your money in a desktop model. While laptops have the big advantage of portability, desktops have full sized keyboards that are much easier to type on. They also are much easier to work on. Which means if you have a problem with it, the labor rate to repair it is less then a laptop.

Some other advantages of the desktop are - the screen size/dollar ratio is better. Meaning for the same amount of money, you can have a bigger viewing screen. This is definitely better for gaming.
Also, since you like gaming you would like the better sound options available with a desktop system.

If you like the idea of burning cds and dvds, then once again I recommend a desktop for you. There are many more hardware options for them.

The major advantage with a desktop system is that they never have to be recharged. Nothing worse then running out of power in the middle of a good game. Having said that if you feel you need to carry a computer with you at all times, then you should choose a laptop.

Manufactures are important in a lot of ways. I highly recommend Dell computers! They are built well, dependable, and have an excellent customer support. Part of what you are buying with your purchase is the support of the company. If you have questions or need repairs, exchanges, etc. that always seem to come up, you will need good customer service. I can't recommend HP even though I'm typing this on one right now. Their support is almost non-existant.

After working on computers for over 20 years, I have seen most of the things that can go wrong with them, and I can tell you that your best friend as a novice computer user is a good warranty and good customer support.

Hope this helps you.
