How do you mean?

The thinking behind that was that conservatives (and liberals) exist in every era, and the conservatives in general tend to aim at maintaining the social norms of that period.

I see conservatives as having been a part of a successful western European culture. Family values, religious morals, free enterprise, limited government, ethical work values. Least that's the social norms these days that they want to preserve. US conservatism is actually a branch of the liberal movement in that they see the government in the position of servant of the people not master/authoritarian.

In the past perhaps they were more traditionally authoritarian.
