For our first daughter, I traded a fox pelt for part of the fee... true story.

How'd that work?

Yes, and probably more relaxing as well.

Some desire to give birth at home, but it wouldn't be my cup of tea... I couldn't imagine giving birth with all the cats in attendance. Last time I went into labor, one of the [male] cats screeched and screamed and writhed on the floor every time I had a contraction... the support was nice, but I don't think I'd have wanted to deliver with him in the room.

When they went to discharge my mom from the hospital after she had one of us, she cried that she didn't want to go home, because she was still so sore, and no one would help... The nurses felt so poorly for her, they fudged some papers so she could stay an extra day.

She wasn't lying... she said she returned to a full sink of dishes(which she was expected to do, despite having had a C-section). My dad was not a nice man in his younger years.

Aw, yes, it would not be for everyone. A hospital setting would be preferable to screaming cats. lol

I’m glad the state stepped in for you

What would have happened if the state didn’t intervene? Would you have had to go into debt?
LOL 42 years ago... I think I did for about $1000 - add inflation for 42 years? :) . Didn't mind making payments.

So I’ve heard a lot about the cost of giving birth. Specifically in the US.
Which is insane to anyone in a developed nation outside the US, to be completely honest
But I think it’s pertinent to the discussion thanks to recent events
(ahem R v W ahem)
So how much does it cost you to give birth in your country?

And if abortion is outlawed at the federal level where you live, meaning it’s subject to the states of your country rather than a federal matter, do you think any costs of childbirth should therefore be assumed by the federal government?
As a sort of compromise?

Have at it but please be respectful :)

I'm a bit confused.
Do you actually mean just the cost of going to the maternity hospital for the delivery and then going home?
The hospital bill?

THAT bill barely costs anything at all here in Belgium as most of it is covered by national health security.
The thing that costs a few bucks is if you wish to have a luxury room by yourself where you can host visitors with the comfort of privacy. For us, it was about 500 bucks for the private hospital room for 3 nights.

So barely anything, tbh.

Now the cost of raising children is another story off course.
Sure, you get financial child support and you also get some tax cuts. But that doesn't cover it all.
So it costs what it costs for clothing, toys, extra mouths to feed, extra hotel beds when going on holiday, etc.

The state sponsored child support (everyone gets it - both rich and poor) covers education and alike.

I can imagine that purely the hospital bill for delivering a baby in the corporate US of A is a small fortune.

Birthing a child in the US is actually a fairly costly endeavor. And this is not including prenatal care either, OBGYN visits, ultrasounds and checkups.

Average Childbirth Costs & How to Pay With Health Insurance.

"In the U.S., the average cost of a vaginal birth is $13,024, including standard predelivery and postdelivery expenses such as facility fees and doctor fees. A cesarean section (C-section) is much more expensive, costing an average of $22,646 including standard predelivery and postdelivery expenses."

Let's also not forget how much it costs to raise a child. Let alone birth one.

"In the US, the average cost of raising a child through the age of 17 is $233,610. This figure is based on data compiled in the most recent Expenditures on Children by Families report completed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)."

Dear..................

Those are INSANE numbers.

Yeah same for us. But you and I live in countries with Universal healthcare. Thankfully!!

Yeah I was mostly trying to gauge an American bill. Just because again, you and I consider giving birth in a hospital for free to be a given. Because our healthcare is primarily taken care of by taxes and our respective governments.
So I was curious at how much our American friends have to fork over to just give birth.
Which I’m sure you’ll agree is likely way too much.
