" Couples who choose not to have children are selfish, says 78-year-old virgin"

The Pope and his severe disconnect.

"Couples Who Choose Not To Have Children Are 'Selfish,' Pope Says.

Pope Francis said that couples who opt not to have children are being "selfish" as he spoke of a "greedy generation" that's choosing not to procreate.

"A society with a greedy generation, that doesn't want to surround itself with children, that considers them above all worrisome, a weight, a risk, is a depressed society," the pope said. "The choice to not have children is selfish. Life rejuvenates and acquires energy when it multiplies: It is enriched, not impoverished."

On a visit last month to the Philippines, one of Asia's fastest-growing and most impoverished nations," Francis defended the church's ban on artificial contraception.

The pontiff's remarks come just weeks after he seemed to send a contradictory message, telling Catholics that they don't need to breed "like rabbits."

Actually you could argue they're being quite altruistic, shouldering those tax burdens known as children through finance of public education, welfare programs, etc.

it is mighty strange for "celibates" to be outraged by this. Or is the pope unhappy that they won't have potential victims in the near future?

The Catholic Church is no stranger to cognitive dissonance and inconsistency. This pope, despite seeming like a reformist at first, is just upholding the modus operandi of the Catholic Church.

I was going to say, just because they're not reproducing doesn't mean they're celibate.

He's not a reformist, he's an apologist. He's great at talking reform but he doesn't actually take any actions to make reform happen. He's just flapping his gums and maintaining the status quo. Why anyone is impressed with this guy is beyond me.

The pope is just doing his job: promote the increase of the population so that there is no escape from poverty.

We should never forget: the Catholic church does not love the poor. It loves poverty .. and the ignorance that necessarily comes with it.

Why does it love poverty? I think it is pretty obvious.

Meanwhile...

I guess the Pope, and Cardinals, and Priests, are willfully selfish. :p

What a bad example they are!

I have a very hard time entertaining the notion that someone might feel that we need to encourage people to have children.

There is overpopulation in this world. The world is filled with children who are unwanted. So why would anyone think it is selfish to not want children?

While I disagree it's being selfish, I do agree that the conditions of our society, that having children is such a worrisome risk, one that you must be able to afford, is very depressing.

If having children is so great and wonderful and not having children is so depressed, then would having children be selfish? Seems like I am the one missing out while everyone else pays less taxes for some reason...

I don't get it. What's your point?

Seriously?

"This is another reason, with which the apostle supports his advice to virgins, and unmarried persons, to remain so; since the time of life is so very short, and it is even but a little while to the end of the world, and second coming of Christ; and therefore seeing the marriage state is so full of care and trouble, and it affords still less time for the service of Christ and religion, he thought it most advisable for them to, continue in a single life, that they might be more at leisure to make use of that little time they had for their spiritual good and welfare, the edification of others, and the glory of Christ ..." ~ Gill's Exposition Of The Entire Bible.

The boldface is mine, by the way.

Hopefully, you'll agree that this summary is accurate:

Premise A: Procreation outside the bonds of matrimony is sin.
Premise B: Paul admonishes the faithful to avoid marriage and advises the married to behave as if they were not.

Conclusion: Procreation is to be avoided. Jesus is due back any second now.

...

Therefore, not only is opting to not have children not the least bit selfish, it is demonstrably supported by scripture.
