COVID-19 Shande

This, excerpted from NPR:

Facing an increase in coronavirus infections in certain neighborhoods, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday that he would close all nonessential businesses, public and private schools, and daycares in nine ZIP codes throughout Brooklyn and Queens, to ensure that the virus doesn't spread further. ...

... The ZIP codes encompass areas in Central Queens, Southern Brooklyn and Far Rockaway. They correspond with areas with a high Hasidic Jewish population. "We are concerned about how Covid-19 may be affecting Orthodox communities — in these neighborhoods and beyond," Patrick Gallahue, a spokesman for the city's Health Department, said in late September, The New York Times reported.

To the extent that the correspondence relevant, one would think that the principle of פיקוח נפש (pikuach nefesh - the preservation of life) would demand that the Jewish community be at the forefront in addressing this. Thoughts?

I haven't done any research in the area. If there is a direct and provable correlation then those people who are flouting rules and regulations should be ashamed, regardless of religion.

@jay thank you for providing this fine piece of work. Just to clarify, are you saying it is the OJ’s to blame?

Thank you, RR for this. Agreed, it’s a shanda for anyone of any religion not to wear a mask. Do you think G-d punishes those that don’t wear masks ? Someone said:,”RGB won her first case in heaven”, any thoughts ?

P.S. - this is a great website, where we can all express our views freely and openly !! Thank you RR and Big R for making this all possible!

No, I don't think God punishes those who don't wear a mask. I think that a person not wearing a mask has a higher chance of getting infected and/or infecting others.

Have I ever mentioned how cute you look when you say something totally outrageous?

Thank you, Big R. Please stay focused on pikuach nefesh.

“During the cholera epidemic in the 1840’s, Reb Yisroel Salanter ate in shul on Yom Kippur to encourage his congregants to eat and protect their health. He did this because the highest value in Judaism is pikuach nefesh, the saving of human life.”
