Creating new threads - the challenges

What do you do when you have a good idea for a thread but can't quite find the muse to get the topic worded the right way? Do you wait? Do you write it out anyway?

I have this issue come up here and there. I'll have an idea for a thread, and then can have some trouble arranging my thoughts in an orderly-enough fashion to make a sensible opening post for the rest of you. Usually, the threads just don't get made and then I forget about the idea. Anyone else have this happen? Maybe there's other challenges of creating threads that you face that are different?

For me, it really depends on the topic. If it is a heated political issue I will take my time. Wording is important and conveying the right message in addition to the words themselves helps tremendously. In that case, if I cannot convey my thoughts in a way that makes sense and gets my message across, I put it off for awhile.

I had the trouble of not being able to create new threads, LITERALLY. So I pinged Quagmire and Brent W. But I had to hijack Iti oj 's mod introduction thread to do so, which I'm very sorry about. Also, Debater Slayer came in and pinged on my status.

I'm very appreciative for everyone for their assistance in fixing the issue!

Thanks again. :)

There's been plenty of times I've started writing a thread only to give up half way through. Some of them get too long and complicated to be worth the effort. Others just feel like I'm taking a dump in public and its needlessly controversial or that the response is predictable so it's not worth the effort.

Personally, I don't have much problem creating threads, I just have few questions I'm looking for input on.

You are much like myself.
You seem to understand the importance of the written word and therefore what you post must say exactly what you want it to say or it is not good enough.
A lot of good ideas are wasted that way.
It seems that what people like ourselves think is mediocre others sometimes think is brilliant.
It has been a life long struggle when it comes to writing.
It is something that i both love and hate.

It took a fair while until I felt confident enough to start my own threads with any regularity.

Before that, I mostly fished for existing threads and attempted to add my own two cents in a somewhat fittingly way.

I might make entries in my Journal if I found the need to bake an idea before releasing it, but that does not seem likely to happen very often in the foreseeable future. I guess I am the kind of person who naturally feel the need to create a thread only after the idea is somewhat coherent.

I have the opposite happen to me. I will type out a post, proofread it and then think to myself, "do I really want to post this?" and wind up deleting it completely.

Many have been spared because of a change of heart. :p:D

Hah... sometimes it can be a good idea to just stay away from creating (or participating) in threads that really grind your gears. If it starts feeling like a rant or rage... what @Laika colorfully described as "taking a dump in public" I usually take that as a sign to table the idea completely until I've calmed down and can be impartial about it. :D

Decide into which category to make your thread: Debate, Gathering opinions, Humor, Criticism, Request for Information, Friendly Romp, or Demonic Miasma.

Predict how many responses you will get by comparing with similar threads in the past.

To shorten a thread, offer your opinion in the OP. To lengthen it, make the subject controversial and reserve your opinion for later. To make it really, really extra long, appeal to conscientious people in a way that they feel compelled to defend something in a way that requires a lot of specification and clarification.

I just create it, wording it how I think makes the most sense, and see how it goes.
