"Creationists demand equal airtime on Neil deGrasse Tyson’s ‘Cosmos’ to provide ‘balance’"

Yup. That's my impression. Sagan was very poetic about the universe. Very much in love as you suggest.

And Sagan is the reason to Tyson's career in astrophysics.

Makes you wonder if somewhere out there some young person is falling in love for the first time.

Someone, somewhere did, but then they were hit by a meteorite or swallowed by a black hole. That's life in our universe.

Carl Sagan was a romantic. A man of vision who never quite achieved what he might, but battled on, out of love for his craft. He was an artist who saw science as an artform, to be presented as such. Tyson, though lovely, is a media whore.

Yeah, Carl Sagan kind of was too.

But I don't think that's a bad thing. I mean, our choices in media aren't very broad. If are choices are Tyson, or Kim Kardasian, or Honey Boo Boo, I couldn't be happier that Tyson is a media whore. Let's get more scientists like him, who knows, maybe we will actually learn something while being entertained by TV.

Sagan recieved much of the same kind of criticism. I think it is sad. We desperately need more public scientific education in our society. But everytime a scientist try's to communicate to the public they are attacked personally.

I think that is a big part of the reason the show was made. To show the wonders of space.

I don't see why the naysayers here think it should be dark. Its an hour long show with 20 minutes of ads. Not much time to explain the wonders of the universe .

That's what I'm saying. I see nothing negative about Tyson being a media whore, I just wish more scientists were like him.

Have you ever been in love?

People in love are often unable to see any flaws.

Some people are in love with the universe. It is particularly common to astrophysicists.

Actually the tone set by Neil deGrasse Tyson is a pretty close match to the tone set by Carl Sagan in the original. He was also in love.

I have heard of weird fetishes before, but this one takes the proverbial cake.

I think you're right.

When science is made to be presentable to the public, it will be "dumbed" down, simplified, made nice and easy to understand, and so on. Which means that whoever is the messenger of the simplified science (popularized version) will be criticized.

You know what have been better? If the show was produced by David Lynch, directed by Quentin Tarantino, written by Darren Aronofsky and hosted by Jeremy Irons. Now that would make it an interesting science show.

Tyson wasn't always like that. His earlier interviews would have given you the impression of someone who is incapable of putting things into easier-to-understand layman's terms. However, in order to better communicate the science and make it more sound-bite media friendly, he worked on how he presents his science to the media. Really not to be a whore about it, but much like Sagan, it is something that is done to share his love of science.

Creationism isn't science. Sorry.
