I read the entire argument. I didn't pick two statements arbitrarily, I chose them because I felt they summed up the author's point neatly.I don't see any contradiction at all if the entire argument is read. Picking out two statements and arbitrarily placing them side-by-side, while ignoring the "connecting dots," is also pleading. Such a method could debunk many an argument.
In the end, the first cause argument always comes down to special pleading: at its core is the idea that everything must be caused, but God, even though He is part of "everything" does not need to be caused, for some reason.
