"Lucifer" is more of an idea, like light-bearer, bright morning star, day star, shinning one, bringer of morning, etc. These all share common symbolic meanings, which is the concept of being a bringer of light or bearer of light. Light tends to be symbolic for knowledge, enlightenment, gnosis, things of that nature. We all tend to vary in how we interpret it. Other common traits "lucifers" show is a constant quest to attain some impossible goal and be responsible for spreading knowledge. Jesus came to mystical truth and tried to spread it, Buddha was seeking nirvana, the king of Babylon wished to build a tower that reached heaven, the serpent in the garden introduced Adam and Eve to knowledge itself, Thoth was the God of knowledge and balance, the list goes on and on for figures a Luciferian can choose from. But, another common theme is obviously "perfection" / "divinity", something all these examples are tied to in some way.
In short, it is more of a life path / philosophy. It should also be noted that Luciferians and a Satanists are two very distinct groups, though the philosophies are not mutually exclusive by any means.
