Curriculum Body in India Decided To Drop Evolution and Periodic Table From School Science

Curriculum Body in India Decided To Drop Evolution and Periodic Table From School Science

"In April 2023, it was widely reported in India that the topic of evolution would be cut from the curriculum for students aged 15-16. The extent of changes became clearer when the National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT) released a textbook for the new academic year that started in May. NCERT is the public organization in the country that developed curriculum and textbooks in Indian schools.......

Closing Important Chapters

The syllabus for class-10 students composed of 15-16 years olds does not include an entire chapter on the periodic table of elements. Meanwhile, whole chapters about sources of energy and environmental sustainability have also been removed. The changes also include eliminating a small section of Michael Faraday's involvement in studying electricity and magnetism in the 19th century.

For younger students, they will no longer be taught certain topics about pollution and climate while older school students will experience cuts to subjects such as biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and geography. Changes in other subjects include the removal of chapters on democracy and diversity and political parties. For older students, a chapter on the industrial revolution has been removed.......

NCERT also wants to promote the country's pride and maintain the richness of its ancient and modern culture and traditions. Some people interpret this as a way to learn more about the precolonial history of science in the country."

Seems the world is going for a division of labor on a global scale. Europe will be tasked with science, research and development and the rest with production and destruction.

I don't think that will happen anytime soon:

China, India, Japan, and South Korea are doing quite well on that front, and the first two are only growing further.

There's still some R&D happening in USA.
While some public schools here underperform,
there are still good students & schools supplying
talent to industry & research organizations.
Moreover, Europe periodically likes to go to
war with itself. That interferes with education.

Yep, and often by immigrants who had their education abroad.

Especially if those talents had some of their education outside the US.

war with itself. That interferes with education.
That is historically correct but so long ago that it doesn't matter today.
The US likes to go to war with the rest of the world and that is pretty current.

Yep, and often by immigrants who had their education abroad.
You're so wrong. Many such immigrants got their
education here, as is the case where my daughter
works managing recruitment programs for high
tech information & analysis services. But they also
hire many highly educated Ameristanians.
Especially if those talents had some of their education outside the US.
That is historically correct but so long ago that it doesn't matter today.
My bro-in-law visiting here is a professor of engineering
at a US university. He tells me that foreign students are
increasingly badly prepared in the basics, eg, math,
& require much remedial training.
The US likes to go to war with the rest of the world and that is pretty current.
Currently, Europe is at war, so that barb is mighty weak.
Jump'n Jeebus....when isn't Europe at war with itself or
its neighbors, currently Russia. US involvement in that
war is to prevent Russia from over-running more of
Europe, which is a weak association that can't defend
itself effectively without help.

Methinks that without any experience in USA education
& business, you're judging performance of the top tier
professionals by the many miserable public schools.
So unprepared students abound, but they're not the
ones working at NASA, Northrop, Two Sigma, etc, etc.

According to ‘Periodic table have been made more age-appropriate, not removed’: Read the NCERT clarification over curriculum changes, the concepts in question are still taught in higher or lower classes. Moverover, I looked at the linked provided in your article (NCERT) and saw, for example, that the Periodic Table and Evolution are still included in the syllabus for other classes. Can you offer anything that would provide some additonal perspective on the situation?

Yes, this is what I have also read. The concepts will be taught in more appropriate or advanced classes.

The theory of evolution is not at odds with Hinduism which states of astronomical figures like billion year old kalpas or cycles and is not confined to a mere 6000 year time span as the Abrahamics. Modern Hindu saints like Vivekananda and Aurobindo had talked favorably of evolution and said it is in tune with Hindu philosophies.

Losing one year of evolution should not matter if it is real science. Propaganda cannot tolerate any breaks in the conditioning. Relax if you have truth on your side. Truth will stick. Lies will atrophy.

Removing chapters on democracy, diversity and political parties is good. These wolves in sheep's clothing can be misused. In America, one political party controls the public schools and we now have one party indoctrination and revisionist history.

It harder to have democracy; freedom for all, when you are taught to push your own diversity agenda in a zero sum game, that Lefty has to win. We should be teaching common ground; MIGA or Make India Great Again.

The periodic table cannot be treated properly with one chapter; one week. The problem may be the smart chemistry students will get overly simplified misinformation, to be more inclusive to those who could care less about chemistry. Inclusion and equity can damage smart kids if the dumbing down is used to increase average test scores. Also, Lefty politicalizing may teach each element as being good or bad depending on who discovered it. CO2 is evil even if carbon and oxygen are good.

The Industrial Revolution was more about the rise of the West. The East was a place for the West to find cheap labor, moving people out of the country, to the overcrowded cities.

I think you misunderstand Republicans.
They want education too, but tend to have a
different agenda about what should be taught,
eg, no evolution, more Bible.
No, they really, actually aren't that big into education, especially the Evangelical Christians among them. That group especially is distrustful of education (and have been for a long time), places very little value of skills trade or college, and is prone to believing the only things worth knowing come from the Bible (and even then, American Church History has examples of pastors who couldn't read and never read the Bible).

That just isn't true and is not applicable to a country on the other side of the Earth.
And how is democracy a wolf in sheeps clothing? Participatory democracy, afterall, has done wonders to curb political violence and wars as it's not just the nobility who gets a say.
Diversity? India isn't homogenous either.
The periodic table cannot be treated properly with one chapter; one week.
Why not?

That's nit true either.
The Industrial Revolution was more about the rise of the West.
More like the rise of the steam engine and how that transformed the world. East and West, North and South, very little of the world was left unchanged by it.

Can you explain why the periodic table is not appropriate for grade 10 students?
Over here (in Australia) they already learn it in 6th through to 8th grades.

Same for evolution i believe.
But what proportion of hindus do Vivekananda and Aurobindo represent the scientific beliefs of? I understand Hinduism to be diverse rather than homogeneous, so is it reasonable to expect different hindus will have different beliefs about evolution? My wife is Hindu and she seems to believe God "made" everything.
