Damascus

Hello,

In islamic sources, specially Hadithes, can Damascus (دمشق) mean the whole region of Sham (old syria)?

Thanks

From Wiki:

The Sham region is sometimes defined as the area that was dominated by Damascus, long an important regional centre — in fact, the Arabic word al-Sham الشام standing on its own can refer to the city of Damascus.

Hi,
Which hadith are you referring to? Majority of ahadith that mention الشام are not referring to Damascus only but the region consisting of Syria,Jordan, lebanon and Palestine, israel.

On the authority of Zaid Ibn Thabit Al-Ansari that: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, ‘How blessed is Al-Sham! How blessed is Al-Sham!’ “And how is that, Oh Messenger of Allah?” People asked him. ‘Those angels of Allah have spread their wings over Al-Sham’, he answered.’ ‘The Prophets built Bait Al-Maqdis (Al Quds),’ Ibn Abbas added. ‘And the Prophets lived in it, and there is not an inch in Bait Al-Maqdis where a Prophet has not prayed or an Angel has not stood.’ [Tirmidhi]

Hello,

For example this:

58- Ghaibat Nomani: From the same chains, it is narrated from Ibne Mahbub from Alaa from Muhammad from Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) that he said:

“Expect the cry to come to you surprisingly from the direction of Damascus. Then the great deliverance will come to you.”

Hi.

This Hadith does not talk anything about the Sham.

But, according to a Hadith from Imam As-Sadiq (a.s.) in Kamaluddin by Sheykh Saduq, Damascus is indeed a part of Sham.

Abdullah bin Abi Mansur Bajali narrated:

I asked Imam Sadiq (a.s.) about the name of Sufiyani. He replied: “Why do you want to know his name? When he conquers the five districts of Shaam, i.e., Damascus, Hams, Palestine, Jordan and Qanassireen, you wait for the relife.”

Shaam is greater syria that includes Syria, Palestine, Jordania and Lebanon. I believe it is the place where mushrikiin and ahlu kufr will be defeated Bi'idnillaah.
