Two of our neighbours have lost cats this week to a coyote who has moved into the area. One of them was agonizing over telling their 6 year old that Mr. Mittens was now a more uniform brown than before. How do you tell a kid that the bloodstain on the front lawn isn't associated with the missing cat?

You don't tell them it isn't associated with the missing cat if it really is. You tell them the truth.

Death is a part of life. No amount of parental protection can shield a person from having to deal with that reality of life.
