Death to the Heinous and Abhorrent Term, "Higher Consciousness"! Death!

I think you're way over-thinking these terms. "Higher consciousness" could simply refer to an expanded realm of consciousness. As in being consciously aware of a greater range of inter-connection within the world around us, and/or with and to us. Whereas "mystical awareness" could simply refer to our being aware of our own conscious "bias" to the degree that we can recognize is as it is occurring. For example, we become consciously aware of the 'me/not me' bias in the way our brain works such that it becomes a part of the field of 'the observed'.

Thanks for bumping my thread. Other than that, your post makes no sense to me.

So that's how that's spelled.

I always thought it was "hire consciousness" as in "pay to have someone do your thinking for you".

Phhht...you say that, but despite sending you a brown paper bag full of money I still seem sadly stuck with my own fuzzy brain box.

Glad to know tens of thousands of psychologists and neuroscientists are mistaken.
You might want to talk to psychologists and neuroscientists about that subject. The subconscious is a colloquial term that is not used in psychology.
"If someone talks of subconsciousness, I cannot tell whether he means the term topographically -- to indicate something lying in the mind beneath consciousness -- or qualitatively -- to indicate another consciousness, a subterranean one, as it were. He is probably not clear about any of it. The only trustworthy antithesis is between conscious and unconscious." - Sigmund Freud via Subconscious

Freud? You're kidding me, right? Last time I looked, this was 2019.

Why? That's precisely explained in the OP. You should read an OP now and then. At least one, just so you can say you did.
our existence gives us practical examples of lower and higher. we do not know exactly nature of consciousness only judging it by 'ripples on the surface of water' that it leaves, as mystica! should do.

Whatever you say. Thank you for you contributions to the thread, such as they were.

Freud cited by a psychology wiki page from 2016, confirming that what the founder of the discipline said still holds true. And better than the unnamed tens of thousands of psychologists at any rate.

Freud and Jung would have called for Death to the Heinous and Abhorrent Term, "Subconscious"! Death! ;)

That the brain processes information "on a level" that the conscious mind is unaware of is, I believe, indisputable.

"Subconscious" is a colloquial term, (with unconscious being the technical term,) just as "Higher Consciousness" is a colloquial term.

Dearly Beloved RFers.....

It's October! And you know what that means, right? That means the time has rolled around once again for Uncle Sunstone's 13th ever "ANNUAL OCTOBER RANT AGAINST THE TERM, "HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS"!

(Note for Pendants: This is actually only the second annual rant against the term, but I started numbering with 12 -- Twelve being my favorite number, of course, and because I can.)

Just so you know.

......
[rant] "Heinous"? "Abhorrent"? "Repugnant"? "Detestable"? "Loathsome"? "Naughty"? No. No, none of those words will do. None of them are strong enough, shocking enough, venomous enough to fully express the profound nausea and revulsion that any sensible person must feel when she or he hears the term "Higher Consciousness". By the grace of al that is sacred and holy about Colorado's nude hot springs, I swear that term grinds one's socks to smelly dust!

Consider! Please, please consider! Consider a few of the reasons that the word "consciousness" should not -- should never -- be spoken of in such a way as to fundamentally associate the nature of consciousness with the nature of mystical awareness. Gods, but doing so is a travesty, a crime, an outrage!

  • Consciousness comes with biases, numerous built in, genetically-based, cognitive biases, such as the confirmation bias. Does mystical awareness come with cognitive biases? No? Then why on earth call the two things mere variations of each other? Huh? Huh?
  • Consciousness is a lens through which the world is experienced. Like all lenses it at least somewhat alters, somewhat distorts what passes through it. For instance, the world as seen through consciousness contains ranks. Somethings are seen as superior to others. Somethings are seen as inferior to others. This perception of the world as involving superior and inferior things is not born out by physics. There is absolutely no natural property of matter that intrinsically ranks one configuration of matter as superior or inferior to any other configuration of matter. Yet almost the moment an object comes into consciousness, consciousness is on one level or another ranking it! How arrogant of consciousness to presume to rank an intrinsically unranked reality! How cheeky! Does mystical awareness rank things? Absolutely not! But then why, why on earth call mystical awareness a form or variation of consciousness? Why?
  • Consciousness is essentially, fundamentally inhibitory. Information does not merely pass through consciousness, but is reduced in both quality and quantity as it passes through consciousness. Consciousness is, as Aldous Huxley called it, "a reducing valve". Is mystical awareness "a reducing valve"? Lands no! Mystical awareness is an expansion of awareness. An expansion! The very opposite of consciousness. But then why on earth call mystical awareness a species of consciousness?
We could easily, you and I, go on and on and on here about the differences between consciousness and mystical awareness. On and on. But already I have made my point. Already my blood pressure has exceeded the lawful limits for a fake, pretend rant. Already my Victoria's Secrets ladies lace-thong panties are twisted in a knot.

In sum, if there is any -- any -- term in the world's languages with more likelihood of stopping a bull elk in its tracks, stunning a black bear, or causing a soaring eagle to fall from the heavens, I am clueless of what that other term might be. To witness the use of "higher consciousness" is to witness a train wreck. Nay! It is to witness no mere train wreck, but rather the "Great Derailment of '89" when the Southern Pacific 109-car coal train out of Salida, Colorado skipped track off the Royal Gorge Bridge and plummeted 1014 feet into the Arkansas River far below. It is to witness THAT train wreck.

Don't do it! Just don't use "higher consciousness" when you mean "mystical awareness". Think of the children! Think of the domestic animals! In your heart, you know I'm right. [/rant]

And Now -- in a futile effort to make it up to you for insufferably ranting at you... a tune

Sorry, I'm not going along with this. This is the Man, trying to keep people from becoming more than galley slaves by labeling the word consciousness as biased. Sorry pal, that won't fly. That's something blatantly that those lizardfolk will tell you.

Lizard Person: Consciousness is racist. Go back to sleep, monkeys, while we herd you and plot to exterminate you. We can't have you becoming immortals and sages, because that would thwart our plans.
Human: I heard you say something about exterminating us.
Lizard Person: No you didn't. Here, have a virtual reality device using this smartphone. It's totally not going to make you forget you're in VR in the first place. And look, it's shiny!
Human: Whoa, shiny! I guess I could forget for a second about Buddha self/Higher consciousness...
Lizard Person: Mwahahaha!
More Lizards: MWAHAHAHA!!!
Human: That time I'm sure...
Lizards: We were just ummm clearing our throats.

Bottom line, we should do nothing of the sort. Just the opposite in fact. Higher consciousness is essential to culvitation and awakening.

I neither use nor understand "woke".

Woke refers to people who are suddenly "aware" (a large portion of why I hate insistent terminology, is that it reads too much like political correctness and relabeling, so no to mystical "awareness", keeping higher consciousness) of "important social issues". Usually though, it refers to myopic and self-congratulating idiots that do something like tell other people to recycle while ignoring their own hypocrisy of using a jet to fly to the location (vs just displaying a Skype on a large screen, my template here is Al Gore), or who have decided something stupid like that "ham" in the word hamburger is offensive to Muslims (BK actually decided this, being completely unaware that hamburger actually refers to meat in the style on Hamburg).

In religion, awakened is okay, being "woke" is not.

There is no such thing as a subconscious. You are either conscious of what you are doing or you are unconscious.

It is not so black and white. In psychoanalysis, only the ‘unconscious’ is used and is the target. Freud himself clarified that conscious and unconscious are true anti of each other. There can be no doubt about that.

But Freud proposed a ‘preconscious’. And Jung proposed ‘personal unconscious’ and ‘collective unconscious’.

Yet, you need a term for ‘awareness that is not in focus’ but that can be accessed, such a temporarily forgotten memory. Therefore subconscious is a term which is often used in psychology.

Recently, a term ‘non conscious’ has also come to be used. The point is that that there is a part in mind that may be subconscious or non conscious but can be changed with conscious attention.
