I don't understand what legitimate reason a person would have for such a tattoo other than as a badge of service

I don't think it's the same as having one of your favourite sports team

In my infantry unit I had a friend who had a special forces tattoo on his arm he never went into Special Forces as far as I know , but he was a soldier who had the tattoo as an inspiration.

He might have joined later when the hook was made available for people to try out.
