A whole lotta detente going on around here!
I'll fix that.....y'all a bunch of poopy heads.

Gawd, I hope Detroit can dig itself out of its hole.
A new mayor & a savy chief cop portend better.
(Although Dave Bing seemed good.)

Ha - I'd want the citizens to do my job as well if I was in charge of the Detroit police. They couldn't do any worse.

I was gonna say something similar. If armed private citizens are fighting crime in Detroit, it's only because nobody else is.

Amazing that the article closes by celebrating the death of an 18 year old boy. "Wahoo, he's not burgling any more! Yay guns!"

The "boy" made the choice to victimize others, and by doing so accepted the risks and potential consequences that came with it. Also, I would never fault anyone for standing up and defending themselves, their family, or their land/property from danger and intrusion.

So, yes, "wahoo" indeed.

Legal guns are fine, but there is no actual evidence that it deters crimes.
Really?

More RTC, less crime: Since 1991, when violent crime peaked in the U.S., 24 states have adopted “shall issue” laws, replacing laws that prohibited carrying or that issued carry permits on a very restrictive basis; many other federal, state, and local gun control laws have been eliminated or made less restrictive; and the number of privately-owned guns has risen by about 100 million.5 The numbers of gun owners and firearms, RTC states, and people carrying firearms for protection have risen to all-time highs. Through 2010, the nation’s murder rate has decreased 52 percent to a 47-year low, and the total violent crime rate has decreased 48 percent to a 37-year low.6 The FBI preliminarily has reported that violent crimes decreased another 6.4 percent in the first half of 2011, translating into a seven percent decrease in the total violent crime per capita rate.7

Of course armed citizens deter violence.

They also feed and empower it.
I guess it would depend if you think killing criminals is wrong. That is really the bottom line is it not?

Some folks believe no matter how awful a person is or what terrible things they are about to do nothing justifies killing them.

And yet we have volumes of debate here at RF ;)

In lieu of evidence, they put a spin on things. For example, attempting to portray a dangerous man with malicious intent as an innocent boy who accidentally wondered into someone's house at night, only to be murdered just for fun by the home owner.

The punishment does not fit the crime. That's my point. I don't own one single item worth more than the life of a teenager.
