Dhammapada: Chapter 1 commentary

an anarchist

Your local anarchist.
(16)16
Virtuous ones delight in this world and delight in the next one. They delight in both. They delight and rejoice when they see the purity of their own deeds.

The intent behind the word “virtuous” can be discovered by reviewing the previous verses, so I shall.

A virtuous one might be described as one who: thinks pure thoughts, forgives abuse, has good life habits, and is in control of their temper.

What I’ll say is that from experience I know the verse to be true when it says being virtuous causes delight in this world. I know not of the next world, but apparently this worldly life of mine will affect what happens next.

The cosmos are nice to give us the emotional motivation to be virtuous. Because it really does feel good to be good.
