My favorite is looking up the same word in different dictionaries. They usually have several different definitions. I always expect them to be exactly the same.

exact 1. correct 2. precise 3. this and no other 4. strict 5. functioning accurately @microsoft encarta.

exact 1. precise 2. correct 3.completely accurate A Students Dictionary & Gazetteer 17th edition

exact 1. without mistake 2. demand and get Scott Foresman Intermediate Dictionary

I would do that when I didn't like the definition of one of them.

David Foster Wallace read the entire Oxford English Dictionary when he was a kid.. I hear. That's a 20 volume dictionary.. wowee.

Doesn't mean he retained anything. If he wanted to become more knowledgeable he should have read an encyclopaedia
