Did Einstein steal Vedic Idea of Physics

Stormcry

Well-Known Member
Hello readers, :)
Einstein is widely acclaimed as one of the brilliant scientists ever lived on this earth. He gave us theories like speed of light, relativity, time dilation and others. However you might be surprised to know all his prominent theories have roots in Vedic scriptures.

Not very known fact about Einstein is that he was a great admirer of Mahatma Gandhi and Ravindranath Tagore. Since Mahatma Gandhi was a follower of Bhagavad Gita, he must have read Gita and thoroughly understanding it, he must have said following words about Gita-

"When I read Gita and reflect about how god created the universe everything else seems so superfluous" - Einstein

And not to forget relativity of time is mentioned in Gita. ;)

Now coming to the point-

Einstein's theory of time dilation is well mentioned in Hindu scrptures. Other many inventions strikingly similar to modern inventions are there in those scriptures and probably because of that many Indian scientists are well convinced that Indian scriptures are not myths and they are researching for more scientific discoveries.

According to Hinduism, Lord Brahm, creator of the universe has its own planet called as 'Brahma-Loka'. The lifespan of Brahma is 100 Brahma years, or 72,000 kalpas, or 311.04 trillion human years. That is 100 years on that alien planet is equivalent to 311.04 trillion human years. That's time dilation.

Now couple of stories from the oldest epic of the world- Mahabharata-

Story of Kakudmi in Brahmalok

In satya yuga(Golden age), there lived a benevolent and courageous king called Kakudmi. He had a very beautiful daughter named revati, endowed with auspicious and mystical qualities. King Kakudmi was not able to find a suitable match for her in the entire earth and decides to travel to Brahmalok (Which exist millions of light years away from earth). When they arrived at brahma lok, Lord Brahma was listening to a musical performance by celestial Dancers. King kakudmi waited patiently for sometime till the musical performance was finished. After the musical performance when Lord Brahma asked the king for his problem, he said “I am not able to find a suitable match for my daughter ‘Revati’”. Then Lord Brahma smiles and explains that time runs differently on different planes of existence. Your few minutes in my celestial planets are equivalent to many yugas on earth. Brahma said by the time you came and stayed here, already 27 Manvantara have passed. "O King, all your ministers, wives, kinsmen, father etc, all those whom you have accepted as your sweetheart has swept away in the course of time. Today, nobody on earth knows about you or your descendants”. Shocked and surprised, king looks for a solution. Then Brahma says “If you start now, by the time you reach earth, you will be in Dwapar yuga of 28 Manvantara. There you can marry your daughter to Balaram, the avatar of Sheshnath, Lord Vishnu serpent. And You will be granted Moksha(Salvation) by none other than lord Krishna, avatar of lord Vishnu for that yuga.”

Muchukund fight with demons in Indra loka

In treta yuga, When demons attacked Deva loka(Celestial planet few layers above earth), Indra(Lord of heaven) requested valiant warriors from other planets to fight against demons. King Muchukund from earth joined indra to fight against the demon. Their fight lasted for one year and ultimately, indra and other deities defeated the demons. After the battle, Indra asked Muchukund for a boon. King Muchukund said “I want to go back to earth to meet my family”. In a grim voice, Indra said “You fought here for only one year but millions of years have passed on earth and no one on earth remembers you now”.

These are just two examples but If we go deeply on the each and every old text of Hindus, we can find thousands of hints to the hundreds of the new discoveries.

I will finish this thread with the following sentences from the Bhagavat Purana which explains the relativity of time:

“…One’s life endures for only one hundred years, in terms of the times in the different planets. Eternal time is certainly the controller of different dimensions, from that of the atom up to the super-divisions of the duration of Brahmâ’s life; but, nevertheless, it is controlled by the Supreme. Time can control only those who are body conscious, even up to the Satyaloka or the other higher planets of the universe.”

Your Views? He got inspired from Vedic scriptures? Possible?

Think wisely :) Thank You

Well, I think steal might be a bit strong. Being an intelligent and creative individual, he probably derived inspiration from all sorts of sources. Did he read the Gita, etc., before he came up with his mathematical descriptions of relativity? He certainly could have, but I don't know enough of his biography; perhaps someone else can answer that. The Special Relativity paper was 1905, but General Relativity was years later. But it's not like the equations for relativity are there in the Gita and other writings--he still had to figure that out on his own.

Based on our understanding of Einstein's relativity, it sounds like Brahma-loka is millions of light years away, in another galaxy, such as M31, or is in a very deep gravity well, such as near a black hole, if the text is to be taken literally.

But Einstein is not the first to come up with the idea of time dilation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luminiferous_aether#Lorentz_aether_theory
As we see, there is a history of many scientists & mathematicians working on problems which would inevitably lead to time dilation, & special relativity.
Even general relativity was the result of problems with special relativity & observations.....although it was less "inevitable".

My views? No, not stolen. Inspired? Probably not consciously. More likely inspired by that instance where two trains are moving and you cannot tell which ones. But maybe he was trying to imagine clocks running everywhere to explain the difference in time between places in stories. But this could have been inspired by many different things. I see no reason to think Hinduism outright.

Einstein probably just derived the ideas about relative time from his life experiences. His brain had the unusual property of having an over sizes corpus-colossum, and this probably caused him to think differently from other people. In addition he did not reference the Gita as a source for his ideas, and I think he would have said so if he had.

Einstein's conclusions were based on empirical data and mathematics, not a priori apologetics.
As an educated person of his time and place he was probably aware of the metaphysical tenets of Theosophy, Eastern religions, Platonism, transcendentalism &c, but I doubt that these contributed anything substantial to his equations. If anything, his internalized religiosity proved an impediment in the end, when he was unable to accept that God does play dice.

*glances over at bookshelf beside studio setup* I have a couple of books on Einstein and Relativity. And I've read the Bhagavad Gita at least twice. I can't really see the connection, and I really doubt that quote is real. I kind of stopped reading ( skimmed) your post after that.

As both a Hindu and someone who considers herself somewhat scientifically literate, I think you are just trying to find validation in your faith through anyway you can.

Now if some texts wanted to talk about his theories for real, and not just be some interpretation put on them in hindsight... maybe they would of included specifics such as the mathematics involved. Einstein got his ideas when bored in a patent office. I don't know how well read he was, if anything he was just lucky with his creative thinking. He's really the exception when it comes to major breakthroughs in science. He wasn't the genius that everyone made him out to be, if anything he was just an odd guy with an above average IQ.

So unless some text talks about stars bending their apparent position during solar eclipses or clocks running slower closer to the earth or the speed of light always being observed to be constant no matter how measured id reckon it was just hindsight interpretation to validate one's beliefs.

Also the idea of time running different in different "planes" isnt new, but that is totally different than time dilation by gravity or relativistic speed.

There are authors who write about interstellar travel, time machine, Alien-human-machine hybrids and so on- but do they have any scientific knowledge or back ground in any of these? not necessarily. These are of-course creations of imaginations and thought, but science and mathematics doesn't have any role there and these are not solutions to any real world scientific problems. These are simply creations of art. (Our artistic thoughts can run much faster than real scientific progress and it doesn't need a scientific back ground or support - so one can make a story about someone living inside someone to someone living at the center of the Sun).
On the other hand, theory of relativity is scientific; Though it too made a few assumptions - that the velocity of light is a constant regardless the velocity of the observer or source of light. The scientific community has checked the validity of these assumptions a number of times through different possible methods, but could not disprove it. Based on these assumptions, he made a few predictions - and these predictions too agreed with real world scenario. (these predictions too were tested and verified using real scientific experiments). All these predictions were based on the mathematical analysis of these assumptions. I don't think Gita scores mathematically.

Every religion put forward some stories. Time variation/dilation associated with Brahma is one of these (what I believe personally). Psychologically, or perception of time is quite tricky. When we do something interested (as in playing, reading or watching movies), time seems to run faster. On the other hand, time seems to stand still when we do something that we don't like -( waiting for someone,). . Maybe, the author who wrote the story of Brahma would have thought about this and this would have given him a creative hutch to add something about time -variance in his story.

Albert Einstein might have read Gita, but it was never the reason to include that in his theory. Time dilation came as a by-product after analyzing his assumptions mathematically. So is the relation E = Mc^2
311 trillion human years??? is that possible when the universe is itself just 14.5 billion years old?. Our species (Humans) just came in the last 200,000 years of evolution.

No, that's not time dilation. This is the definition of time dilation:

In the theory of relativity, time dilation is a difference of elapsed time between two events as measured by observers either moving relative to each other or differently situated from a gravitational mass or masses.

Einstein didn't believe in a creator God thus him talking about something which he does not believe in is nonsense. He was agnostic and stated this repeatedly. Also the quote lacks a citation from Einsteins own work. Until you provide a proper citation your argument is unsound

As Albert Einstein once said, "Don't believe every quote you read on the internet, because I totally didn't say that."

It's true that Einstein said that, because I read it there, too!:D And Abe Lincoln agreed!

His theories have no roots what so ever in Vedic scriptures.

Just because you have found vague similarities, does not in ANY way substantiate these so called roots you are claiming.

Are you sure it is not straight up mythology?

Possible?

NO.

I think Einstein could have get the basic idea that time can be relative in different places/dimensions of the universe and later he made observations/theories with a presumption of the idea.

The man did not study religious text to explain the universe, in any way shape or form.

He was a brilliant man in science and math, and his equations had nothing to do with any previous mythology.

All of his observations were well recorded and there is a perfectly clear path to exactly how and why he came up with the equations he did.
