Did god create evil?

Flaming Queer
if you believe that God created the world and everything in it, you must accept that God created us with the ability to do evil - in effect, God created evil

though, that is just my oppinion

In that respect I agree with you. Man learns from his surroundings.

Agreed. If one assumes that God created everything in existence and evil exists, then it logically follows that God created evil.

Even if God did not directly create evil, but allowed it to happen as a result of free will, then God is still responsible for the existance of evil, for he allows he creations to perform evil acts.

Either God acknowledges evil and does nothing to stop it, regardless of the reason, which makes him malevolent and sadistic
OR
God is aware of evil and cannot stop it, which makes God impotent.

or the evil is there for a purpose which doesn't make G-d malevolent or sadistic

there are all kinds of dangerous things in this world, we try to teach our children the best we can, but ultimately they will decide whether to perform those dangerous and self destructive things....does that make every parent whose child does something stupid or harmful to themselves or others, a bad parent???

you can not have light w/o darkness to contrast it.

I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil; I am HaShem, that doeth all these things.
Isaiah 45:7

If it created evil, then it appears to be toying with humanity since in creation, it said all it created was good. Evil is good in essence. Now selection good or evil for humanity seems to be a mute point since no matter what you selected it all comes back to it, since it created it.

But if God is infinitely benevolent and infinitely powerful then why couldn't/wouldn't he create an existence where evil is unnecessary, where there is no purpose for evil?

I disagree. That's dualistic thinking. One cannot have light without darkness? Darkness is the absence of light. Darkness cannot exist where there is light.

If you are talking about a Biblical God, which verse are you talking about?

It makes G-d sadistic to wish his children to step up once in thier lives?

very true

i think what i was trying to point out was the fact that HaShem creates things, sometimes, that seem to contrast one another, and they are designed that way for a higher purpose. The conflict of the two can be a source for both refinement and destruction, depending on which way you go w/ it.

if He purposefully made us to live in a perfect utopia, then we would do nothing for ourselves...then we might as well be automotons.

we are meant to refine our souls in this world...and to refine this world as well so that we can raise it up.

From a mystical standpoint, one could say it is our task to take the darkness of this world and transform it into light.

G-d chips in alot, but he isn't supposed to treat us like babies.

But isn't this what the prize of heaven is, utopia? Perfect happiness and being one with God?

I agree that the humanity needs refinement and enlightenment, but only for the benefit of humanity, not to appease any deity.

Why would a perfect Creator create an imperfect world? Shouldn't any creation of a perfect creator be, by virtue of the source of origin, be perfect already?

But God put us in this Evil world to begin with.

That’s like me filling a pool up with acid and then throwing my child in, telling him that he will have to swim to the edge and pull himself out. I know it will hurt him greatly, but if he reaches the side he'll be better because of the suffering. And hey, just to show that I care I'll throw him one of those buoy things so it'll be a little easier for him to stay afloat.

Sorry, thats pretty sadistic in my book.

Ummm maybe for christianity...
Judaism's focus is on THIS life and THIS world...
no one's quite sure what's coming next...

G-d instructs the Jewish people to "Be Holy for I, HaShem, am Holy"
i do not think of it as appeasing my G-d, but rather as living up to a higher potential that He has engrained in myself, as well as all mankind.

says who? can't He choose to make something imperfect for the purposes of our betterment? Do you do EVERYTHING for your children or do you expect them to do for themselves and learn and grow on their own at some point??

Please explain the purpose of Adam and Eve before the fall in the Garden of Eden then.

no one said that the world was Evil

just that the Evil in this world was created by HaShem...just as the Good in this world was as well...

do you shelter your children forever for fear of them being hurt?? and take care of their every whim and desire so they never feel pain?

if you did...your children would never grow up.
