Diets

Just curious if anyone here was dieting or has dieted in the past. What kind of diets are you on or have tried?

Currently I'm doing the Adkins Diet for a month or two. I a, really surprised at how effective it is. I began the diet weighing 224lbs last Thursday and I am already down to 117lbs today. I've been trying to exercise as well. I'm getting enough carbs and sugars to keep my blood/sugar level stable (wouldn't want to hurt my kidneys). Anyway, I miss chocolate and beer. :( I'm craving a juicy burger packed to the brim with everything in Asgard between the bun!

Are you serious!? Thats over 100 lbs in a few days. Did you really mean 217?\

I have been dieting with T-Bomb 2, Stacker 3, Tae-Bo, much gym time, and bike riding and running. I started at 280, and I'm down to 250. I've lost alot of fat mass, but muscle mass is much heavier.

It is far more healthy to have a stable weight, than to yoo-yo diet, as many people do.

Loosing weight too quickly is bad - it mans that the weight will go back on just as fast again, if not faster.

The strain on the heart is bad if someone goes through cycles of loosing weight, putting it back on....etc. Better to be a little overweight but remain stable.:)

i agree with michel- and let's not for get that one can be heavy and still be healthy.

though i'm afraid i don't see many folks who make both categories where i live. :(

i've been on a diet for several months now. i've cut out junk food, foods with lots of sugar and/or fat, breads, and meat. so i now eat fruits, vegetables, dairy, and rices, and i can say that i feel alot better than i did a year ago.

i can run and walk longer distances without getting winded, and i've slimmed down from a 10 to an 8/6. also, hot weather doesn't seem to bother me as much.

diets can be good, and i do think that most Americans need to change the way they eat. i just get worried about "fad diets", though.

yeah, you can have a little fat on you and be healthy, but twenty pounds overweight isn't healthy by any standard.

Darkdale, sounds like you're program is working good. Don't neglect weightlifting--it burns more calories than cardio in the long run.

I work on the machines at the gym, I don't do much weigh lifting. lots of sit ups and such. I'm somewhat of a stalk, I've never had much muscle to speak of. It's a little embarressing going into the weight room and being like, hmm, I'll just push the bar up and down for a while. :)

True. We've been working out for over seven years now. We also do personal training. Machines are great exercise--free weights add variety and are useful in giving your muscles added work (since you not only need to lift the weight but steady it as well). Crunches might do more for you than sit-ups (and won't stress your back as much), but abs don't require much exercise at all to look "washboard". Any fat in your stomach area will hide all the ab work you're doing. Cardio is the best way to find your "six pack".

I hate diets. I went on so many different diets when I was younger trying to lose weight I didn't need to lose. I did find that the best thing to do, was to simply eat less; to eat what you normally eat, but to really pay attention to your body, and to stop eating as soon as you no longer feel hungry.

Staying well hydrated by greatly increasing the amount of water you drink also helps your body tolerate heat. A few large bottles of a sports drink also helps if your going to be active all day.

I agree that many Americans do need to change thier eating habbits, with both what is eatin and how much is eatin. Like the guy on Supersize Me said "Who really needs 8 oz. of french fries?"

I too tried Atkins/ Low- carb diet last summer.

Avoiding as much carbs as you can, both complex and simple starches, is a good way to start. Cut down on sugar, bread, rice, pasta, baked goods, juices, sodas, fruits, and certain vegetables.

Make vegetables your main source of food and protein to compliment it.

Last summer I didn't have a job or anything so I stayed on the low carb diet for 1 1/2 month during summer and regularly exercised by playing basketball or just doing anything that makes you move to sweat a lot and weights. I went from almost 200 pounds to my current 160 pounds. I initially dropped down to 145lbs but I gained more mass through weight lifting and got myself up to 160.

All you gotta remember is one thing - burn more calories than you take in. Same for low carb and any other diets out there.

I agree with you about your suspicion of fad diets, Gracie.

There is only one way to lose weight - intake less calories, and use up more. It is as simple as that. As for healthy living, ideally one should avoid all convenience food and pre prepared supermarket foodstuffs - most contain 'bad' fats, and excessive salt (which is only there to add taste to what would otherwise be a very bland product).

Fish oils are excellent as a preventative for arthritis, and it is apparently good for the brain - I don't know why though.

Five helping of fruit & veg a day (fresh if possible) - and little - sorry Americans - red meat; ideally one should only eat red meant max a couple of days a week. Avoid alcohol (apart from the known side effects,) it is extrmely high in Calories.

Follow all the above instructions, and you should be able to add a good few years onto your expected life span.......

Meantime, you will have nothing nice, and no fun, but hey better to die old and miserable than young and happy.:biglaugh:

What does concern me about diets is the message being sent to teenage girls; the idea that one should be unaturally slim is one of the main contributory factors of anorexia and bulemia. That said, I am oveweight, but there is little that I can do about it because I am disabled (other than give up food altogether - at least I am 'stable'; like I say to others, my weight is fine, it's just that I am too short:D )

I just started dieting two days ago. It's my own dieting plan. Basically I don't consume more than 1500 calories per day, my daily need is around 2200-2500. I eat mainly fruits and vegetables, shredded wheat, salad, an occasional sub sandwhich. I also have been exercising, which helps me burn about 300-400 calories. I should lose about 1 pound of fat every 5 days. After I lose the desired amount of weight, I will gradually move onto a sustaining diet, that is I will not consume over my daily need of 2200-2500 calories.

This is physically impossible. 1 pound of fat equals 3500 calories. You would have to burn 350,000 in 6-7 days. Thats around 58,000-59,000 calories per day. You couldn't even burn that much if you jogged (6 mph) nonstop for 24 hours and starved yourself the whole way. You would either have to have lipo suction, or amputate limbs to lose that much weight in that many days.
