DIR Forums Take Two

I personally don't care for the DIR's, I think too many hide behind them, just my opinion.

In future changes would it be possible to have optional DIR notifications? For instance, my DIRs can be rather infrequent, it would be cool to have a little alert when there's a new thread. Just a thought!

You can do so already by clicking on "watch forum" e.g. here: Left-Hand Path Religions DIR
I haven't tried it myself yet (my DIRs are rather infrequent as well, so it's easy to see whether there's something new), but it should do.

Rival, chill. That's twice now you've jumped in to take a subtle swipe at me in order to defend the mods. They do not need you to do that for them. I do not have it in for anybody here, nor do I have a problem abiding by the rules. But there's a "two plus two equals four" thing that you are not considering by dismissing my suggestion so cavalierly.

If merely "reading the rules" was adequately educating newbies who are accidentally posting incorrectly--apparently NUMEROUS times!--then why do the mods have to spend so much time policing posts and issuing citations to them? Creating illustrative examples of the behavior the mods are trying to correct is not an unreasonable idea.

There is a thread that Debate Slayer made about giving suggestions of the rules without breaking the rules by the suggestions in doing so. You can suggest what you'd like to be clarified in site feedback. I did that but since the mods are busy, it may take a while to get a reply.

I notice the rules are shorter. Before it had more detailed information about what the 1-10 polices where. Maybe one or two sentences or a short paragraph would help so people know, for example, you can't quote someone else in one thread to another without that person's permission. Even though @example's are used to do the exact same thing is allowed but the long post/quote isn't. These lead to accidents that I only suggest be looked into.

Well, just speaking for myself there's some truth to that: whenever we decide to poll the membership or otherwise involve you guys in whatever changes we're thinking about making, I always give a lot more weight to the input and ideas from established members, ie., people who have been here long enough and been active enough to have earned a say in how things are going to be done.

Aside from that, for some reason it seems that whenever we try something like this, it's almost always new people --- people with a handful or posts and who've only been here for a few weeks -- who go right to lighting the torches and passing out the pitchforks.

If you look at it from the newbie in, if I came in as a newbie and there was a poll to help the site, if I wasn't a troll (though most forums think newbies are) and polled on the site, I'd probably be giving an opinion on first impressions. For example, when I came onto the site, you guys already changed the color-coding thing for the DIRs. While seniority always gets the lead for some political reason, it also helps to see if it works out from those coming in. If a newbie gets swamped with trying to figure out how to post on the forums because the forums were switched and you have to do extra steps just to post into them, that would drive people away cause of the complexity of the site. So, I'd probably say maybe there should be an easier layout so members coming in and "seniors" can navigate the site better.

Another reason for having newbie participation is to get a fresh opinion about the site. Given I don't know how you define a troll since online is very hard to tell and people get "warned" often because of it, I'd also regardless a troll or not think about any ideas that may be going on behind the sarcasm or anger. Maybe he is frustrated that day. Maybe he needs a slide on some of the "accidents" and get a verbal warning first. Then maybe they will feel more helpful on the polls (and more people willing to stay on RF) because they feel they have contributed to something without needing to stay on RF for years like the rest of us.

On that note, having contribution-polls give members a sense of why they come to the site. Yes, we can chit chat about redundant topics all day long but a lot of us actually trust people on the site with their personal business. Many probably have busy lives and invest their time on RF for some addictive reason , I don't know. But having productivity and contribution threads (and rules about how it should be set up or used in the Rules, maybe) would probably also give members a reason to pay for the site not just to clear the ads.

Nah, I'm just relaxing and browsing websites/forums today, so I've time and decided to help you out a bit with this - both your questions were things I wondered about as well when I saw you mentioning them, and were a matter of seconds to find out as I already had ideas where to look, so why not share my findings with you when I already took that effort?
